Spring Airlines A321-200: Runway Incursion During Landing at Sapporo

A vehicle entered the active runway during the landing of a Spring Airlines Japan Airbus A321-200 freighter at Sapporo on 29 November 2024.

Spring Airlines Japan flight IJ407, operated by an Airbus A321-200F freighter, was conducting an approach to runway 01R Sapporo New Chitose Airport (CTS).

The aircraft was conducting a scheduled freighter service from Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT). The flight was on final approach to runway 01R as per a clearance from air traffic control.

Whilst on final approach leg, a construction vehicle entered the active runway. Despite the runway incursion, the aircraft continued with the landing.

The Japan Transport Safety Board (TSB) issued a brief confirming statement following the runway incursion incident. “At approximately 00:00 on November 28, a construction vehicle entered the runway while a Spring Japan cargo plane was approaching after receiving clearance to land.”

The Japanese TSB will now open an investigation into the incident.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight IJ407 had made an on-time departure out of Tokyo Narita at 2237 local time on 29 November.

The flight had proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL350 for the northerly service to Sapporo. Descent and initial approach procedures were similarly conducted normally, and the aircraft was given clearance to land on runway 01R.

The aircraft conducting the IJ407 service from Tokyo was an Airbus A321-200F, registered JA83YA. This is a 14 year old narrowbody converted freighter aircraft belonging to the carrier Yamato Transport. It is operated by Spring Airlines Japan.

It has been in operational service with the carrier since April 2024. Prior to its conversion to freighter configuration it was operated in passenger configuration by Qatar Airways from its initial delivery in December 2010.
