Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) has now submitted its bid to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for new daily nonstop service between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas (LAS).
The proposal, which aims to secure one of five new round-trip slots at DCA made available through the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, has resonated strongly with the public.
Over half of the comments filed with the DOT have expressed support for Southwest’s application, underscoring the airline’s popularity and the perceived benefits of this new service.
Additionally, numerous political, community, and business leaders have reportedly thrown their weight behind the proposal, recognizing its potential to stimulate economic activity and enhance travel options.
In a demonstration of grassroots support, nearly 15,000 U.S. travelers have already registered their endorsement for Southwest’s application.

Current Service Gap
The current landscape of the DCA to LAS route reveals a significant gap in service. Currently, only one daily nonstop flight is operated by a competing airline.
Southwest’s entry into this market would introduce the first real head-to-head competition. The move neatly aligns with the airline’s 53-year history of disrupting markets with low-cost alternatives.
This competition has consistently led to lower average fares, and increased passenger traffic. This has led to subsequent economic growth in the markets they serve.
The new route would enhance travel options across the western United States, including improved connectivity to Nevada, California, and Hawaii.
Southwest also plans to provide the only one-stop, same-plane service between DCA and Sacramento International Airport (SMF) via LAS.
This innovative routing would create a much-needed direct link. It would connect California’s capital and the nation’s capital, filling a current gap in air travel options.
Travel, Tourism and Nevada’s Economy
The potential economic impact of this new route has not gone unnoticed by key stakeholders. U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen emphasized the critical role of travel and tourism in Nevada’s economy.
“By increasing the number of flights to Las Vegas from around the country, it will create more opportunities for visitors to come to our state and help bolster our local economy.”
This sentiment highlights the ripple effect that increased air connectivity can have on job creation, economic development, and support for small businesses.
Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County Director of Aviation, also supported this notion. She noted the broad coalition of support from local elected leaders, national unions, utility companies, and the business community.
Vassiliadis emphasized the transformative potential of connecting the nation’s capital with the entertainment capital of the world, predicting enhanced competition, expanded access, and decreased ticket prices.
Summary
From Southwest’s perspective, the proposed route aligns perfectly with their customer-centric approach.
Brook Sorem, Vice President of Network Planning at Southwest Airlines, articulated this vision. “The DCA to LAS route delivers what’s most important to Customer – choice and flexibility.”
“We believe more Customers will benefit from lower fares while enjoying the airline that offers legendary Hospitality and unrivaled flexibility.”
As the DOT considers Southwest’s application alongside other contenders for the coveted DCA slots, the strong show of public and institutional support may well tip the scales in the airline’s favor.
If approved, this new route could mark a significant shift in travel patterns between the East and West coasts.
