Southwest B737-8 MAX Diverts to Nashville After Engine Shutdown

A Southwest Airlines B737-8 MAX enroute from Birmingham to Chicago diverted to Nashville after shutting down an engine in-flight on 5 November.

A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-8 MAX operating from Birmingham, AL to Chicago Midway, IL diverted to Nashville after an engine shutdown on 5 November 2024.

Southwest Airlines flight WN203, operated by a Boeing 737-8 MAX, had departed from Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM). The flight was a routine service bound for Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW).

The flight was en route near Nashville, TN when flight crew experienced a problem with one engine. Flight crew carried out an in-flight engine shutdown and then diverted to Nashville as a precaution.

The aircraft subsequently landed without further incident on runway 20L Nashville International Airport (BNA) approximately 30 minutes after making the diversion.

Due to the unserviceability, the airline mustered a replacement aircraft to continue the scheduled service to Chicago Midway.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight WN203 had made an on-time departure out of Birmingham at 1457 local time on 5 November. The flight had set course normally, climbing to flight level FL340 for the northerly route to Chicago.

The aircraft was in the cruise at FL340 when the diversion was conducted. An immediate descent and direct track to Nashville International Airport was initiated.

The aircraft conducting the WN203 service to Chicago was a Boeing 737-8 MAX, registered N8727M. This is a 6.1 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Southwest Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in September 2018.
