South African Airways (SAA), a stalwart of African aviation, has received a further boost with a new widebody fleet acquisition.

Aircraft Engine Lease Finance, Inc. (AELF) has acquired an Airbus A330-300, serial number 1754, and continues its lease to the airline.

This 2016-vintage aircraft, revealed during the ISTAT Americas annual convention in Phoenix, signals a renewed confidence in SAA’s ongoing revitalization.

This acquisition is also a strategic move that aligns with AELF’s growing presence in South Africa. Joe Cirillo, Chief Commercial Officer of AELF explains. “This A330-300 acquisition presented a unique opportunity to connect our recent activities in South Africa and our extensive experience with A330s.”

SAA Revitalization Continues

The partnership is particularly noteworthy given SAA’s status as a long-standing flag carrier. AELF’s decision to add SAA to its “roster of valued airline partners” underscores the airline’s “positive trajectory.”

This vote of confidence comes at a crucial time for SAA, which is actively working to modernize its fleet and expand its operations.

AELF’s recent activities in South Africa, including the acquisition, leasing, and financing of several Boeing 737-800s, demonstrate a clear commitment to the region. Moreover, their existing fleet of leased A330-200s further solidifies their expertise in this aircraft type.

John Lamola, CEO of South African Airways, expressed his gratitude for the renewed partnership. “SAA is pleased and grateful at the renewal of its partnership with AELF. We grow and modernize our fleet in light of the exciting prospecting beckoning our industry here in Africa and beyond.”

This statement highlights the strategic importance of this acquisition for SAA’s future growth.

The transaction was facilitated by Arena Aviation Capital, a Dutch firm. Erik Dahmen, Chief Commercial Officer of Arena, praised the “smooth professional deal closing” and congratulated AELF on the acquisition.

He also emphasized the transaction’s significance in Arena’s strategy to “add value to and generate more revenue from third party services.”

Conclusion

This acquisition represents a positive step for both SAA and AELF, showcasing the potential for growth and collaboration within the aviation industry in Africa.

The A330-300 will undoubtedly play a crucial role in SAA’s efforts to enhance its services and expand its reach. With the recent confirmation of John Lamola as CEO, the carrier now continues its journey to regain its position as a leading airline on the continent.
