Skywest CRJ-900 Diverts to Albany After Losing Cabin Pressure

A Skywest Airlines CRJ-900 operating a service from Providence to Detroit made an emergency diversion to Albany, NY after losing cabin pressure on 27 November.

Delta Air Lines flight DL3831, operated by a Skywest Airlines Canadair CRJ-900, had conducted a departure from Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD). The aircraft was performing a scheduled flight to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).

Whilst en route in cruising flight, flight crew reported a loss of cabin pressure. The crew then initiated an emergency descent to 10,000 feet. Following the event, flight crew elected to make a precautionary diversion to nearby Albany.

The aircraft subsequently landed without further incident on runway 19 Albany International Airport (ALB). The landing at the diversion airport was conducted just over 30 minutes after the initial diversion.

The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to conduct the onwards scheduled service to Detroit.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight DL3831 had made an on-time departure out of Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport at 0502 local time on 27 November.

The flight then set course normally and had climbed to cruising level FL300 (30,000 feet) for the westerly service to Detroit. The emergency descent was conducted as the aircraft passed to the south east of Albany on flight plan track.

Flight crew squawked the emergency transponder code 7700 at 1100 UTC during the depressurized descent to 10,000 feet. A direct diversion to Albany International Airport was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting the DL3831 service on behalf of Delta Air Lines was a Canadair CRJ-900, registered N689CA.

This is a 17.6-year-old regional commuter aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Connection and operated by Skywest Airlines. It has been an operational service with the airline since October 2007.
