Singapore Airlines 787-10 Suffers Brake Problem on Landing at Tokyo Narita

A brake problem on a landing Singapore Airlines 787-10 forced the temporary closure of RWY16L/34R at Tokyo Narita Airport this morning.

A brake problem on a landing Singapore Airlines Boeing 787-10 prompted the temporary closure of one runway at Tokyo Narita International Airport on Monday, 12 August 2024.

Singapore Airlines flight SQ638, operated by a Boeing 787-10 was arriving from Singapore when it experienced the technical problem on landing. Initial reports suggested that white smoke was seen to be issuing from one of the aircraft’s engines when it touched down at Narita International Airport (NRT).

Following a post landing inspection, it was confirmed that no fire or smoke was in evidence from the aircraft.

Several fire emergency vehicles were deployed to attend the aircraft. A runway inspection was then carried out. During the inspection, tire debris said to have originated from the aircraft was found on the active runway.

The landing incident forced the closure of the airport’s Runway B 16L/34R facility for almost an hour to permit cleanup.

Following the incident, a spokesperson for the airline issued a brief statement. It confirmed that the landing flight SQ638 had experienced a “technical issue” with its brakes during the landing.

The airline’s engineering team were able to rectify the technical problem, replacing one of the aircrafts tyres at Tokyo Narita.

Flight & Aircraft Details


Flight data shows that Singapore airlines flight SQ638 and made an on-time departure out of Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) at 00:14 local time on 12 August.

The flight had proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL370 (37,000 feet) for the northerly service to Tokyo. Letdown and approach procedures were similarly conducted normally, and the aircraft touched down at 07:38 local time.

The aircraft conducting the SQ638 service from Singapore was a Boeing 787-10, registered 9V-SCD. This is a 6.3-year-old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Singapore Airlines.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in May 2018.
