Saudia Group and Lilium N.V. Forge Landmark Electric Aircraft Deal

Saudia Group has inked a landmark agreement for 50 eVTOL Lilium Jets, with an option for an additional 50 aircraft.

Saudia Group and Lilium N.V. (NASDAQ: LILM) have inked a binding agreement for 50 eVTOL Lilium Jets, with an option for an additional 50 aircraft.

This landmark deal, signed at Lilium’s headquarters near Munich, Germany, represents the largest of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The ceremony, attended by dignitaries including the German Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Saudia Group’s Director General, underscores the global importance of this partnership.

This agreement, which follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2022, is not just a purchase order but a statement of intent from a world-leading operator about the future of aviation.

H.E. Engr. Ibrahim Al-Omar, Director General of Saudia Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to pioneering sustainable aviation in the MENA region.

“This agreement amplifies our commitment to the Saudi Vision 2030 and positions us as industry leaders in regional electric aviation,” he stated.

Al-Omar highlighted the transformative potential of eVTOL technology, noting its ability to revolutionize travel times and connectivity.

Lilium Jet

The Lilium Jets, capable of vertical take-off and landing, promise to reshape regional air mobility. The aircraft offers a range of up to 175 kilometers and speeds of 250 kilometers per hour. These aircraft offer a viable alternative to traditional transportation methods.

They are poised to tackle traffic congestion head-on. The aircraft will provide fast and efficient travel for business professionals, tourists, and event attendees alike.

Saudia Group’s ambitious plan to deploy these advanced eVTOL jets aligns perfectly with their goal of enhancing connectivity within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Benefit for Regional Travel

The aircraft will provide smooth first and last leg connections into Saudia Group’s regional hubs. They will enable new point-to-point city connections. For instance, the Jeddah to Makkah route is expected to see travel times reduced by up to 90%.

These electric aircraft will support Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. They will also offer faster access to key sports and entertainment events in Riyadh.

They will potentially unlock new possibilities for exploring hard-to-reach tourist destinations across the Kingdom.

Additionally, business travelers attending conferences and events will benefit from improved access and swift transportation.

Arrival of eVTOL Jets in 2026

Saudia Private, a subsidiary of Saudia Group, will manage and operate the first jets, expected to arrive in 2026. The Lilium Jet is configured to carry up to six passengers plus luggage.

Klaus Roewe, CEO of Lilium, spoke of the importance of the new relationship. “The Middle East is a priority for Lilium. Saudi Arabia will be a very large and exciting market for electric, high-speed regional air mobility.”

He emphasized the potential of combining Saudia Group’s significant market knowledge with Lilium’s unique eVTOL technology. This to transform premium class air travel in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

Lilium Current Market Impact

This purchase agreement marks the latest addition to Lilium’s extensive order pipeline, which now consists of 106 firm orders, 76 options, and approximately 600 aircraft under MOU.

The company continues to engage in advanced discussions with additional global carriers looking to reduce carbon emissions and electrify regional air travel.

The partnership between Saudia Group and Lilium includes provisions for aircraft performance guarantees, spare parts, maintenance, and repairs.

Furthermore, the parties intend to sign a comprehensive “Lilium POWER-ON” agreement for aircraft fleet maintenance and support services, ensuring the long-term success of this innovative venture.
