A Ryanair flight preparing to depart from Brindisi Airport, Italy underwent an emergency evacuation on the runway after a fire broke out earlier today.
Ryanair flight FR8826, operated by a Boeing 737-800, was conducting a takeoff from runway 31 Brindisi Airport (BDS), bound for Turin. During the takeoff roll, a compressor surge on the aircraft’s number 2 engine resulted in the omission of a fireball from that engine.

Flight crew aborted the takeoff and brought the aircraft to a stop on the active runway. The aircraft was then attended by ground firefighting appliances. With the situation under control, and emergency evacuation of all passengers was carried out via emergency slides.
It is understood that the Ryanair flight was carrying the complement of 184 passengers, bound for Turin-Caselle International Airport (TRN). No injuries have been reported as a result of the rejected takeoff and emergency disembarkation.
Following the runway incident the airport was closed to traffic. Airport authorities have subsequently issued an official statement on the incident, confirming the closure. Aeroporti di Puglia announces that due to a problem with the departing aircraft, it was necessary to close the Salento Airport in Brindisi.”
The airport statement went on to confirm that the passengers had been transferred to the airport where they were then assisted by Aeroporti di Puglia personnel.
Ground staff subsequently conducted inspections of the runway concerned to check for debris and general serviceability before reopening for operations.
The aircraft conducting the FR8826 for Turin was a Boeing 737-800, registered 9H-QCB. This is an 8.6-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the Ryanair subsidiary Malta Air.
It has been an operational service with the parent airline since its initial delivery from the factory in February 2016. It has operated under the subsidiary carrier since November 2019.
