Major low-cost carrier Ryanair has marked a major milestone on May 12, celebrating 2 million passengers on its Pescara-London Stansted route.

Since launching at Abruzzo Airport in 2011, Ryanair has significantly expanded its presence, boosting tourism, creating jobs, and adding both domestic and international routes.

A key factor in this growth was the Abruzzo region’s decision to eliminate the municipal tax, which allowed Ryanair to increase capacity and maximize the region’s tourism potential.

Investment in Abruzzo Airport Base

Ryanair’s commitment to Pescara is evident in its substantial investments. For Summer 2025, the airline will base an additional aircraft at Abruzzo Airport. This brings its total investment to $200 million with two aircraft stationed there.

This summer, Ryanair operates 19 routes from Pescara, including five new destinations: Cagliari, Kaunas, Milan Malpensa, Valencia, and Wroclaw.

With over 160 weekly flights, this includes daily services to Turin and double-daily flights to Milan Malpensa.

Overall, the airline expects a 30% increase in passenger traffic, surpassing 1 million passengers annually. These operations support over 950 local jobs, contributing significantly to the regional economy.

2 Million Passenger Milestone

To celebrate the 2-million-passenger milestone on the Pescara-London Stansted route, Ryanair launched a seat sale with fares starting at €21.99 for travel through June 2025. These discounted fares are available for booking on Ryanair’s website, subject to availability, making travel more affordable for passengers.

Fabrizio Francioni, Ryanair’s Head of Communications for Italy, expressed pride in reaching this milestone. “This achievement highlights Ryanair’s ongoing growth and investment at Abruzzo Airport,” he said.

“Our Summer 2025 schedule offers over 160 weekly flights across 19 routes, including five exciting new destinations. With an additional aircraft based in Pescara, we’re supporting over 950 jobs and driving tourism.”

“To mark this occasion, we’re thrilled to present Maria Prato, our 2-millionth passenger on the Pescara-London Stansted route, with a €50 gift card to explore any Ryanair destination. We look forward to welcoming even more passengers in the years ahead.”

Abruzzo Airport Perspective

Jessica Coccia, a board member of SAGA (Abruzzo Airport), emphasized the strong partnership with Ryanair. “For over 20 years, Ryanair has been a key partner, starting with the London Stansted route,” she said.

“Today, we celebrate not just 2 million passengers but a growing collaboration that enhances our airport’s role in the region. The gift card awarded to a London resident returning from a weekend in Abruzzo shows how our routes attract international visitors, showcasing the region’s beauty and boosting tourism-related businesses. With five new routes this summer, we’re already seeing the positive impact of this partnership on Abruzzo’s economy.”

As Summer 2025 unfolds, Ryanair’s enhanced schedule promises to bring even more visitors to discover Abruzzo’s charm, from its stunning landscapes to its rich cultural heritage.
