An arriving Ryanair Boeing 737-800 and a departing Binter E195-E2 suffered a loss of separation at Tenerife on 21 October 2024.
Ryanair flight FR4199, operated by a Boeing 737-800, was conducting an arrival from Madrid. The flight was making an approach to runway 30 Tenerife North Airport (TFN).
Loss of Separation Incident Tenerife
The air traffic controller cleared Binter Canarias flight NT6062, operated by an Embraer E195-E2, to take off from runway 30 as the Ryanair flight crew established on final approach.
Binter flight NT602, departing for Madrid Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD), then commenced its takeoff roll on runway 30 in accordance with ATC instructions.
As flight NT602 rotated for takeoff, the tower controller cleared the arriving Ryanair flight FR4199 to land on runway 30. The Ryanair flight crew elected to conduct a go around procedure, presumably to maintain appropriate separation from the departing Embraer.
The Spanish Civil Aviation Accident and Incident Investigation Commission (CAAIIC) issued a statement, characterising the incident as a loss of separation.
“… a loss of separation occurred. The crew of the BOEING 737-800 aircraft was instructed to increase the climb rate and maintain an altitude of 5,000 ft. It performed an airfield circuit north of the runway, subsequently landing normally.”
“The EMBRAER 195 aircraft continued with the scheduled takeoff and continued the flight to Madrid Barajas Airport (LEMD). There was no personal or material damage.” The Spanish aviation body has now opened an investigation into the Tenerife incident.
