A departing Ryanair Boeing 737-8 and on arriving Malta Air Boeing 737-800 experienced a loss of separation at Las Palmas on 12 October 2024.
Ryanair flight FR2296, operated by a Boeing 737-8 MAX was preparing to depart for Palma de Mallorca. The flight was conducting a departure from runway 03R Gran Canaria Airport (LPA).
Ryanair & Malta Air: Loss of Separation Las Palmas
The aircraft operating as flight FR2296, began its takeoff roll and was accelerating on runway 03R.
At the same time, flight FR5822, operated by an Air Malta Boeing 737-800, was on its final approach to runway 03R. The flight was conducting an arrival from Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO).
With the departing Ryanair flight still accelerating on the runway, Air Malta flight FR5822 discontinued its approach at approximately 250 feet AGL. Flight crew then initiated a go around procedure in order to maintain appropriate separation.
According to the online source Aviation Herald, flight data transmitted by the two aircraft shows the two aircraft were separated by approximately 0.98nm.
This separation was recorded as the departing flight FR2296 climbed through the altitude of arriving flight FR58 at approximately 500 feet AMSL.
Following its missed approach, flight FR5822 was able to land on runway 03R, without further incident.

The aircraft conducting the Ryanair flight FR2296 was a Boeing 737-8 MAX, registered EI-IFS. This is a 1.9-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Ryanair. It has been operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2022.
The aircraft conducting flight FR5822 on behalf of Ryanair was a Malta Air Boeing 737-800, registered 9H-QBL. This is a nine year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the subsidiary carrier Malta Air. It has been operational service, originally with Ryanair, since its initial delivery in November 2015
An investigation into the loss of separation has now been opened by the Spanish aviation regulator CIAIAC.
