Ryanair 737 MAX 8 Returns to Bucharest with Smoke in the Cockpit

A Ryanair B737 MAX 8 departing for Marseille made a return to Bucharest after reporting smoke in the cockpit after takeoff on 24 January.

A Ryanair Boeing 737 MAX 8 bound for Marseille made a precautionary return to Bucharest after reporting smoke in the cockpit shortly after departure on 24 January 2025.

Ryanair flight FR3642, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8, had conducted a departure from runway 26R Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP). The aircraft was performing a scheduled service bound for Marseille Provence Airport (MRS).

During the initial climb after takeoff, flight crew reported the presence of smoke in the cockpit. The climb procedure was terminated and a direct return to Henri Coandă International Airport was carried out.

According to the Aviation Herald, flight crew requested that emergency services be made available for the return landing.

Following the report, the aircraft was able to make a safe landing on runway 26L without further incident. The landing was made approximately 15 minutes after the flight’s initial departure.

The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to carry out the onwards scheduled service to Marseille Provence Airport.

Flight data shows that flight FR3642 had made an initial departure out of Bucharest at 1037 local time on 24 January.

Following takeoff, the flight had climbed to 5000 feet before flight crew terminated the climb procedure. An expedited return to the departure airport was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting the FR3642 service to Marseille was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, registered EI-HGM. This is a 3.8 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Ryanair.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in May 2022.
