Rise Air, Saskatchewan’s 100% Indigenous-owned airline, is set to become the first Canadian operator of ATR’s cutting-edge -600 series aircraft.

The airline has announced plans to acquire three new ATR 72-600 aircraft, as part of the operation’s modernization efforts. The new aircraft will be configured with 68 seats.

The first aircraft will join Rise Air’s fleet through a direct purchase from ATR by late 2025. Two additional aircraft scheduled to arrive via lease arrangements in 2026.

ATR 72-600 and Remote Operations

These state-of-the-art turboprops will revolutionize Rise Air’s essential services across Saskatchewan’s diverse terrain. ATR aircraft have proven their versatility in 100 countries worldwide, consistently demonstrating exceptional performance in challenging environments.

Their unique capabilities includes operation on unpaved runways, short airstrips, and in extreme temperatures as low as -45°C. This makes them particularly well-suited for Canadian operations.

Nine Canadian airlines currently operate earlier ATR models, with a combined fleet exceeding 50 aircraft. However, this acquisition represents a pivotal moment as the first -600 series introduction to Canadian skies.

The new ATR 72-600 showcases significant technological advancements, featuring the innovative Montreal-manufactured Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127XT engines.

These powerplants deliver superior reliability and have reduced maintenance requirements. At the same time, they achieve an impressive 45% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to similar-sized regional jets.

ATR have enhanced the passenger experience, offering comfortable 18-inch-wide seats, generous overhead storage capacity, and an advanced climate control system.

These improvements are matched with exceptional fuel efficiency and increased operational reliability. They position the ATR 72-600 as an ideal choice for airlines seeking to modernize their fleets.

Transforming Regional Aviation

“Introducing the ATR 72-600 to Canada represents a transformative moment for regional aviation,” says Derek Nice, President and CEO at Rise Air.

“Our customers across northern routes will experience enhanced comfort and reliability in their air travel. The aircraft’s outstanding performance characteristics and minimal environmental impact align perfectly with our operational requirements in challenging conditions.”

“This strategic investment will strengthen regional connectivity and drive economic growth throughout our service area.”

Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, ATR’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasizes the significance of this partnership. “Rise Air’s selection of the ATR 72-600 marks a double milestone, introducing both this specific model and our -600 series to Canada.”

“We’re witnessing increasing interest in our -600 series from markets like Canada, where operators require efficient, high-performance aircraft capable of year-round service in extreme weather conditions. The aircraft’s capabilities perfectly complement Canadian aviation requirements.”

Rise Air: Commitment and Growth

This fleet investment stands as Rise Air’s most substantial financial commitment in its 69-year history.

It positions the airline at the forefront of Canada’s regional aviation sector through the adoption of the country’s most modern aircraft fleet. The decision reflects Rise Air’s dedication to sustainable growth and operational excellence.
