RAeS Urges New Government to Bolster UK Aerospace Sector

The Royal Aeronautical Society has outlined five key priorities for the UK government to strengthen the aviation and aerospace sector.

The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) has released a position paper outlining the crucial role of the new government in boosting the UK aerospace sector.

The paper emphasizes maximizing UK aerospace value, promoting sustainability, enhancing air power and space capabilities, fostering innovation, and upskilling the workforce.

Aerospace and aviation are vital for connecting people, businesses, and nations. At the same time, this important sector generates national value, creates high-quality jobs, and safeguards citizens.

Priorities for the UK Aerospace Sector

RAeS Chief Executive David Edwards FRAeS highlighted key priorities for the new government. “The Royal Aeronautical Society looks forward to collaborating with the new government to unlock the sector’s full potential.”

“The new government should continue investing in essential air power capabilities, and support sustainable aviation growth through alternative fuel research.”

“It should invest in airport infrastructure and airspace modernization, maximize the economic potential of future flight vehicles and space technology, and ensure a diverse talent pipeline for the industry.”

“With government support and partnership, the aerospace sector can help achieve these goals. It will secure the UK’s leading position in air connectivity, maintaining international competitiveness, and ensuring national security.”

The position paper urges the government to take action in five key areas:

Modernize Aviation Infrastructure

The society emphasizes the need for a strategic approach to infrastructure modernization. It places a strong focus on sustainability and green technologies.

This priority reflects the growing global concern over aviation’s environmental impact and the industry’s pivot towards more sustainable practices.

The RAeS rightly points out that commercial aviation is at a crossroads with alternative fuels and solutions. This requires substantial government support for successful implementation.

Boost Air Power and Space Capability

In light of increasing geopolitical tensions, the RAeS calls for urgent action to address gaps in air power capability and accelerate investment in advanced air force technologies.

The emphasis on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) highlights the UK’s ambition to remain at the forefront of military aviation.

Additionally, the focus on space exploration and satellite technology acknowledges the growing importance of these sectors for national security and global communications.

Expedite Regulatory Frameworks for Future Flight

The society advocates for expedited development of new legal and regulatory frameworks, particularly for future flight technologies.

This forward thinking approach aims to position the UK as a leader in next generation aviation and aerospace development.

The RAeS wisely suggests continued access to EU frameworks through EASA, recognizing the importance of international cooperation in aviation regulation.

Maximize Economic Benefits

The paper stresses the need for sustained, multi year investment in the aerospace sector to support the UK’s global competitiveness.

By calling for an investment friendly environment with regulatory stability and tax incentives, the RAeS acknowledges the challenges faced by the industry and suggests concrete steps to address them.

Develop Talent Pipeline

Addressing the current skills gap in the aerospace sector, the RAeS recommends ensuring accessible vocational training and STEM education.

The focus on diversity and inclusion in workforce development is particularly relevant, as it aligns with broader societal goals and can help attract a wider pool of talent to the industry.

Conclusion

The RAeS position paper provides a comprehensive roadmap for the UK government to support and enhance the aerospace sector.

If taken up, these recommendations could significantly strengthen the UK’s position in global aerospace, drive economic growth, and ensure national security.

However, the success of these initiatives will depend on the government’s willingness to invest and collaborate closely with industry stakeholders.
