Qatar Airways is set to relaunch daily flight services to Canberra. The Australian capital will become the sixth gateway in Australia for the airline.
This network move promises to enhance travel options for business, leisure and government sector customers. It will be the first time the airline has operated into Canberra since the global pandemic.
The new daily service will operate via Melbourne, connecting to the airline’s world-renowned Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha.
DOH is a consistently top-rated global airport that has earned multiple international accolades. Travelers will also benefit from seamless access to over 170 destinations across Qatar Airways’ extensive international network, transforming Canberra into a more accessible global hub.
Flight Resumptions from December 2025
Scheduled to commence in December 2025, the flights will be operated using Boeing 777 aircraft, representing a significant investment in passenger comfort and technological innovation.
Travelers can anticipate an exceptional journey experience, featuring the airline’s acclaimed Q-suite Business Class and complimentary high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi, ensuring productivity and entertainment throughout their travel.
This relaunch is particularly noteworthy, as Qatar Airways suspended Canberra operations during the global pandemic.
The return represents more than just a resumption of services—it symbolizes a strategic recommitment to the Australian market and a vote of confidence in the region’s economic recovery and future potential.
Qatar Airways Group CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer candidly explained the significance of serving Canberra. “As the nation’s political capital, Canberra deserves robust international airline services,” he said.
“We’re proud to introduce healthy market competition and provide greater passenger choices for business, government, and leisure travelers, reinforcing our commitment to connecting communities globally.”
Canberra: Regional Benefits
Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron expanded on the broader implications of this service. “This route opens incredible opportunities for our community,” he noted.
“It provides over a million residents access to a global network and invites the world to discover Canberra’s unique cultural, educational, and tourism landscape.”
The service promises multifaceted benefits for the region. It will substantially enhance regional connectivity, create more competitive travel pricing, and strengthen international business connections. It will further drive economic development, potentially generate new employment opportunities, and significantly boost tourism potential.
By offering direct international access, Canberra becomes more attractive to global businesses, educational institutions, and international travelers.
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr enthusiastically welcomed the announcement as a timely boost to the local tourism industry. “Aviation access is the primary driver of sector growth,” he emphasized. “This service will particularly benefit Canberrans seeking travel to Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East, expanding our global reach and opportunities.”
Partnership with Virgin Australia
The relaunch coincides strategically with Virgin Australia’s new international services, operated on Qatar Airways aircraft. Pending final regulatory approval, this partnership aims to expand international travel options and competition, creating a more dynamic and accessible travel ecosystem.
The partnership offers additional advantages for frequent travelers, including maximized earning and redemption opportunities for Privilege Club and Velocity Frequent Flyer members, along with reciprocal lounge access for eligible passengers. These benefits further enhance the attractiveness of the new route and strengthen the collaborative relationship between the two airlines.
Qatar Airways continues to collaborate closely with Virgin Australia to finalize regulatory approvals for their proposed partnership.
This approach signals a promising future for international travel from Canberra, positioning the city as an increasingly important node in the global transportation network.
