Qantas is set to redefine the domestic and short-haul international flying experience with a substantial Boeing 737 cabin upgrade program. The narrowbody interior facelift will be integrated with its ongoing fleet renewal.
This renewal program aims to align existing aircraft with the standards of its new, cutting-edge fleet.
A Comprehensive Cabin Transformation
Forty-two of Qantas’s Boeing 737 aircraft will undergo a complete cabin overhaul, promising a refreshed and enhanced travel experience. Passengers can anticipate:
- Luxurious New Business Seats: Designed for optimal comfort and functionality, the new Business seats will elevate the premium travel experience.
- Ergonomic New Economy Seats: Enhanced comfort and support will be hallmarks of the new Economy seats, ensuring a more pleasant journey for all passengers.
- Increased Overhead Locker Space: Larger overhead lockers, boasting up to 50 percent more capacity, will alleviate the common struggle of stowing carry-on luggage.
- Modernized Cabin Aesthetics: New carpets, sidewalls, and mood lighting will create a contemporary and welcoming atmosphere.
- Continued Fast, Free Wi-Fi: Passengers will remain connected with the airline’s reliable and complimentary Wi-Fi service.
This comprehensive upgrade program aims to deliver a cabin that feels “as-new,” effectively bridging the gap between existing and new aircraft.
The first refurbished 737 is expected to enter service in 2027, serving destinations across the domestic network. It will also serve the popular short-haul international routes like Bali, Fiji, and Vanuatu.

Fleet Renewal and the Future of Qantas
This cabin upgrade initiative is a critical component of Qantas’s broader domestic fleet investment. The airline is strategically transitioning to a more modern and efficient fleet, with the Airbus A321XLR set to progressively replace the 737s over the next decade.
Complementing this, Qantas is integrating the A220s into the fleet, with five already in operation.

Qantas will also be among the pioneering airlines to operate the A321XLR. This state-of-the-art aircraft promises a host of passenger benefits, including more comfortable Economy seats.
There will be a 66 percent increase in Business seats, a quieter cabin, and expansive overhead lockers. Airbus has recently painted the first A321XLR in the Qantas livery. It is now scheduled to arrive in June, with four expected to join the fleet by year’s end.
Qantas Group CEO Perspective
Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson commented on the importance of this investment. “Investing in our fleet is one of the most significant ways that we can transform the flying experience for our customers and make sure we’re consistently delivering a great journey.”
She further highlighted the airline’s dedication to maintaining a consistent standard of excellence across its fleet. This seeks to ensure that even existing aircraft reflect the latest advancements in passenger comfort and technology.
“Previous cabin upgrade programs have delivered great outcomes for our customers,” Ms. Hudson stated. They allowed us to bring next generation designs and technologies to current fleet that reflect how our customers want to travel.”

Conclusion
The cabin upgrades are not only a boon for passengers but also a testament to Qantas’s commitment to its employees. “This investment in cabins will also support our people who are dedicated to providing the best inflight experience to our customers,” added Ms. Hudson.
As it stands, the upgraded 737s are slated for retirement towards the end of the fleet renewal program.
Qantas is also implementing cabin improvements on some aircraft scheduled for earlier retirement. The airline has over 100 new aircraft on firm order and more than 80 aircraft set for cabin upgrades. Its extensive upgrade program shows a clear commitment to maintaining a high standard of presentation.
