Qantas Freight Joins New Western Sydney Airport Cargo Precinct

Qantas Freight has secured its position as the first airline to join Western Sydney International (WSI) Airport’s state-of-the-art 24-hour Cargo Precinct.

This development marks a crucial milestone in the strategic partnership between the Qantas Group and the new airport. It promising to strengthen air freight capabilities in the Sydney region.

Set to open its doors in late 2026, the new precinct is poised to dramatically increase Sydney’s air cargo capacity by approximately 33%.

This expansion comes at a critical time, as e-commerce and global trade continue to surge, demanding more robust and efficient logistics solutions.

WSI Cargo Precinct Location and Accessibility


The Cargo Precinct’s is situated with convenient access via the upgraded Northern Road. It sits in close proximity to the burgeoning freight and logistics centers of Kemps Creek and the Aerotropolis.

This strategic positioning is expected to create a streamlined flow of goods between air and land transport. This will significantly reduce transit times and improving overall supply chain efficiency.

Precinct Scale and Capacity

The entire Cargo Precinct at WSI is an ambitious project, covering up to 75,000 square meters of total warehousing space. Its design allows for the simultaneous servicing of eight wide-body aircraft, highlighting the scale of operations envisioned for this new logistics powerhouse.

Construction of the precinct began earlier this year and is progressing on schedule, with cargo operations set to commence in late 2026.

Economic and Employment Impact

The local economy will see a significant positive impact with the development of the Cargo Precinct. During the construction phase alone, it is anticipated to create up to 2,000 jobs.

The precinct and its connected supply chains will support more than 19,000 direct and indirect jobs annually when operational. This will provide a substantial boost to employment in the Western Sydney region.

Qantas Cargo WSI Operations


Qantas Freight will play a pivotal role in the precinct’s operations as Australia’s leading air freight carrier. The airline’s dedicated area will span an impressive 24,000 square meters, including 14,000 square meters of state-of-the-art warehousing facilities.

This expansive footprint will enable Qantas to handle a diverse range of goods, from perishables to high-value items.

The terminal facility’s design incorporates the latest advancements in logistics technology. Sophisticated materials handling equipment will ensure the seamless processing of both international imports and express domestic products.

This integration of advanced technology will significantly reduce handling times and minimize the risk of errors, leading to improved service quality for Qantas Freight’s customers.

Fleet Modernization

In tandem with the new facility, Qantas is in the process of transforming its freighter fleet. The hub will be capable of accommodating the airline’s new and upgraded Airbus A321 and A330 aircraft.

These newer variants are not only more fuel-efficient but also quieter, aligning with growing environmental concerns and noise reduction efforts in the aviation industry.

Cam Wallace, CEO of Qantas International and Freight gave comment on behalf of the airline. He emphasized the strategic importance of the new facility in meeting the growing demand for e-commerce.

He highlighted the advantages of WSI’s 24-hour operations, particularly for overnight flights. This will enable faster delivery of parcels and critical freight across Australia.

Simon Hickey, CEO of WSI, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Qantas Freight as the precinct’s inaugural freight airline. He underscored how direct connectivity between freighters, the terminal, and road transport will achieve operational efficiencies.

Hickey also pointed out the unique opportunities this development presents for Australian businesses. From farmers to manufacturers and exporters, there is potential to expand their operations through premium cargo services.

As the project progresses, it stands as a testament to Australia’s commitment to enhancing its logistics infrastructure. It will further assist to secure a competitive edge in the global air freight market. The collaboration between Qantas and Western Sydney Airport will see a new era of Sydney air cargo operations.
