A Qantas Boeing 737-800 operating a service from Sydney to Perth has declared an emergency shortly after departure from Sydney.
Qantas flight QF643 declared an emergency, squawking transponder code 7700 after takeoff from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. The flight is now conducting a return to Sydney.

Flight QF643 was conducting its normal climb after departure, before flight crew terminated the climb procedure at flight level FL130. The flight then initiated a direct return to the departure airport. Flight crew squawked transponder code 7700 as the aircraft commenced a descent to make good a return to Sydney.
The nature of the emergency prompting the expedited return is not yet known.

Having declared an emergency immediately after departure, Qantas flight QF643 has now returned and landed at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD).

Flight data shows that Qantas flight QF643 had made an on-time departure out of Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport at 08:38 local time today. Following take off, the flight was on climb passing FL130 before the departure procedure was terminated.
Flight crew squawked emergency transponder code 7700 at 08:56 local time as the aircraft continued descent through 6,000 feet for its direct return.

The aircraft conducting the QF643 domestic service to Perth International Airport (PER) was a Boeing 737-800, registered VH-VZV. This is a 13.3 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the national carrier Qantas. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2011.

Qantas flight QF643 declared an emergency and returned to Sydney after flight crew reported detecting smoke in the cockpit.
