Porter Airlines has strengthened its New York footprint by launching year-round flights between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

This new route enhances Porter’s long-standing commitment to the New York Metropolitan Area. It has served travelers since 2008 with flights between Newark Liberty International Airport and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

Inauguration of LaGuardia Route

The airline now operates up to three daily roundtrip flights between Toronto Pearson and LaGuardia’s modern Terminal B.

This expansion provides travelers with greater flexibility and choice when visiting one of the world’s top business and leisure destinations. The route also connects U.S. passengers to Porter’s growing network of Canadian cities, making it easier to explore Canada’s diverse regions.

Through seamless connections at Toronto Pearson, New Yorkers can reach destinations like Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montréal, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, and Vancouver.

Whether it’s experiencing Toronto’s vibrant culture or discovering the scenic beauty of Eastern and Western Canada, this service opens up exciting travel possibilities.

Embraer E195 Operations

Flights on this route are operated using the Embraer E195-E2, a 132-seat aircraft designed for comfort. Its two-by-two seating layout ensures no middle seats, creating a more enjoyable journey.

All passengers benefit from Porter’s signature all-economy experience, which includes free, fast Wi-Fi, complimentary beer and wine served in glassware, and premium snacks.

For added convenience, PorterReserve fares offer perks like priority check-in, extra legroom, and flexible ticketing options. Travelers can also customize their experience with à la carte upgrades on PorterClassic fares.

New York as a Key Market

“New York is a key market for us,” said Andrew Pierce, vice-president of network planning and reporting at Porter Airlines. “Adding LaGuardia to our network complements our Newark service and increases travel options.”

“Operating from both Billy Bishop and Pearson to LaGuardia and Newark gives us a unique position among airlines, offering unmatched convenience for travelers between these two cities.”

Suzette Noble, chief executive officer of LaGuardia Gateway Partners, was also pleased with the new partnership.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Porter Airlines to LaGuardia’s Terminal B,” she said. “We look forward to working together to provide exceptional travel experiences for passengers using our world-class terminal.”

Summary

Porter’s strategic move adds up to three daily roundtrip flights. It reflects a confidence in the long-term potential of the New York market. The move is driven by its unique positioning, premium service, and focus on business travel.

Nevertheless, Porter’s has decided to enter the competitive Toronto-LaGuardia corridor. In a sector where it faces rivals like Air Canada, Delta, and American, the move is a bold one.

New York remains a critical market due to its status as a global business and leisure hub. Porter’s president, Kevin Jackson, emphasized New York’s long-term importance, noting “a lot of enthusiasm” for the route during its May 1 launch.

While other carriers cut capacity, Porter increased its U.S. service by 150% year-over-year as of October 2024. Transborder passenger numbers outpaced capacity growth, signaling strong demand for its elevated experience.

By leveraging LaGuardia’s constrained slots, likely secured through a lease arrangement, Porter positions itself as a niche player in a crowded market.

While falling U.S. travel trends pose risks, Porter’s emphasis on premium service, business travel, and New York’s enduring appeal could make this route a success.
