A Piedmont Embraer ERJ-145 operating a service from Boston, MA to Rochester, NY made a precautionary diversion to Syracuse after reporting smoke in the cabin on 14 August 2024.
Flight AA5716 was being operated by a Piedmont ERJ-145 on behalf of American Airlines. Whilst en route from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), the flight crew reported detecting smoke in the aircraft cabin.

As a precaution the crew decided to divert to nearby Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR). The aircraft subsequently landed without incident on RWY 28 Syracuse (SYR). According to the Aviation Herald, the aircraft was brought to a stop on the runway, and flight crew requested an external inspection of the aircraft.
Emergency service assets carried out the visual inspection, confirming that no visible smoke was detected from the aircraft. Following the runway visual inspection, the aircraft then taxied to the apron hardstand area.

Flight data shows that flight AA5716 made an on-time departure out of Boston Logan International Airport at 1417 local time on 14 August.
The flight and then set course normally, climbing to flight level FL300 (30,000 feet) for the westerly service to Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC).
The flight at cruising altitude passing approximately 100 nautical miles from Syracuse when the in-flight situation was reported. A direct track for Syracuse Hancock International Airport was then initiated.
The aircraft conducting the AA5716 service on behalf of American Airlines was a Piedmont Embraer ERJ-145, registered N909AE. This is a 19.5 year old regional jet belonging to the carrier American Eagle. It is operated by Piedmont Airlines on behalf of the carrier.
The aircraft has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in March 2005.
