Perth Airport has achieved a remarkable milestone, welcoming a record-breaking 16.9 million passengers in 2024. This surpasses the previous record of 15.3 million set in 2023, marking a significant 14% increase compared to pre-COVID levels.
The surge in passenger numbers can be attributed to a robust recovery in international travel. The pent-up demand saw a remarkable 23% year-on-year growth. This segment contributed significantly to the overall increase, accounting for 56% of the additional 1.6 million passengers compared to 2023.
Domestic travel also continued its upward trajectory, with regional routes experiencing a 7% increase and interstate travel growing by 6%.
These positive trends underscore the strong demand for air travel within Australia. It signals the growing appeal of Western Australia as a domestic and international travel destination.

A Beacon of Economic Growth
Perth Airport CEO, Jason Waters, emphasized the airport’s crucial role as a barometer for the Western Australian economy. “A thriving Perth Airport signifies a thriving Western Australian economy,” Mr. Waters stated.
“We are confident that there is significant potential for further growth, with a target of 20 million passengers per year by 2030.”
To capitalize on this potential, Perth Airport is actively engaging with key stakeholders. In March, the airport, in collaboration with Tourism WA, will host Routes Asia. This is a prestigious event bringing together nearly 1,000 aviation decision-makers from around the globe.
This platform will provide invaluable opportunities to showcase Perth’s connectivity and attract new international routes.

Investment in the Future
Perth Airport is the primary airport serving Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, Australia. It is located approximately 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) south of the city centre.
The capital city airport has experienced significant growth in passenger numbers in recent years, reflecting the increasing popularity of Western Australia as a travel destination.
It plays a crucial role in the Western Australian economy, supporting tourism, business, and trade.
To accommodate the growing demand and enhance the passenger experience, Perth Airport has embarked on an ambitious multi-billion-dollar investment program. This comprehensive plan includes the construction of a new runway, state-of-the-art terminal facilities, two multi-story car parks with major road upgrades, and the development of the airport’s first hotel.
“These investments will significantly enhance the capacity and efficiency of Perth Airport, fostering further growth in aviation, tourism, hospitality, resources, international business, and education,” Mr. Waters explained.
Construction on the first multi-story car park has already commenced, and early works for the new runway are slated to begin in the first half of 2024. The airport is also diligently progressing with the planning and approval processes for the remaining major projects.

“One Airport” Vision
This ambitious investment program aligns with the “One Airport” vision, which aims to deliver a seamless and efficient travel experience for passengers, enhance operational efficiency for airlines, and generate substantial economic benefits for the state.
By strategically investing in its infrastructure and fostering strong partnerships with key stakeholders, Perth Airport is poised to continue its growth trajectory, solidifying its position as a vital hub for Western Australia and a gateway to the world.
