Air Canada is working to restore its operations following a challenging week marked by severe winter storms in Eastern Canada and the Delta Toronto crash at its Toronto Pearson hub.

The Canadian national carrier has faced extensive delays and cancellations but remains committed to service restoration and prioritizing passenger safety.

Winter Weather and Toronto Crash

“Yesterday was a difficult day, and we were greatly concerned by the incident involving Delta Air Lines. Our thoughts remain with that flight’s customers and crew,” stated Craig Landry, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Air Canada.

The Delta Air Lines Toronto crash compounded the difficulties already presented by the recent winter storms, which have significantly impacted airlines across Eastern Canada.

“We recognize that travel disruptions are inconvenient for customers, but safety must always be our top priority,” emphasized Mr. Landry.

“Sometimes, ensuring safe travel requires slowing down and adapting to conditions. I thank our employees for their hard work and dedication, including their willingness to work overtime and extra shifts, to take care of our customers.”

Cancellation of 1,290 Flights

Over the past six days, Air Canada has regrettably cancelled approximately 1,290 flights due to the combined impact of the severe weather and the incident at Toronto Pearson.

Despite these disruptions, the airline successfully and safely transported over 650,000 customers during this same period. This highlights the scale of Air Canada’s operations and the efforts made to minimize disruption.

Service Restoration Efforts

The airline is actively working to restore its service, adding extra flights and capacity wherever possible. However, the ongoing reductions in the number of take-offs and landings permitted at Toronto Pearson, Air Canada’s global hub, are hindering the speed of recovery.

This bottleneck effect is impacting the entire network. Air Canada anticipates that it may take several more days, depending on weather conditions, to return to fully normal operations.

The airline stated in a release that it appreciates its customers’ understanding and patience during this challenging period.

The Impact of Winter Weather on Air Travel

Winter weather can have a devastating impact on airline operations. Snow and ice require constant clearing, and reduced visibility can make flying unsafe.

Air Canada proactively reduced its schedule in anticipation of the storm, limiting the number of flights permitted to take off and land at major airports.

Toronto Pearson, a crucial hub for Air Canada, typically allows approximately 44 flights to take off each hour. However, recent weather conditions have drastically reduced this capacity, sometimes to as few as 16 movements per hour.

These restrictions are in place for safety reasons, allowing airport personnel time to effectively remove snow and ice from runways and taxiways.

The recent storm and aircraft incident further necessitated the removal of flights from Air Canada’s already reduced schedule. These flights are now being reinstated as conditions improve.

The Importance of Toronto & Montreal Hubs

Toronto and Montreal serve as Air Canada’s two largest hubs. On an average day, approximately 47% of Air Canada’s flights and 46% of its customers connect through Toronto Pearson.

This high concentration of traffic means that any disruption at Pearson, as evidenced by the recent Delta Toronto crash, can have a ripple effect throughout the entire Air Canada network.

Because many aircraft and passengers connect through Toronto, a problem at this hub can create a domino effect, impacting flights not directly traveling to or from Toronto. This interconnectedness underscores the logistical challenges of recovering from a major disruption.

Air Canada is committed to restoring its operations as quickly and safely as possible. The airline appreciates the understanding and cooperation of its customers during this time.
