Earlier this week, a Jet2 flight from Glasgow to Tenerife had to divert to Shannon, Ireland due to passengers & crew being attacked.
Information has been released pertinent to this incident, which we will go into in this article.
Without further ado, let’s get into it…
Jet2 Flight LS155 Glasgow to Tenerife: Shannon Diversion…
Jet2 flight LS155, which diverted to Shannon, is a routine scheduled flight between Glasgow and Tenerife.
Furthermore, the aircraft involved in this incident is registered as G-JZBR.
As per data from Planespotters.net, G-JZBR is a 5.6 year old Boeing 737-800 that was delivered to the airline in November 2018.
Of the 737-800 variant, Jet2 has 98 of them in their fleet.
Furthermore, of the 98, all but two are in active service, with an average fleet age of 14.7 years.
Other aircraft that the airline has in it’s fleet are:
- 7 Boeing 737-300s.
- 6 Boeing 757-200s.
- 2 Airbus A330-200s (On lease from AirTanker).
- 5 Airbus A321ceos.
- 8 Airbus A321neos.
Jet2 flight LS155 departed Glasgow at 1551 local time on June 12 and initially tracked south towards Tenerife.
To the south of Shannon, the aircraft made a swift u-turn and subsequent diversion to the Irish airport.
As per The Daily Mail, this was due to a passenger allegedly attacking crew members and other passengers.
Crew and passengers were able to eventually restrain the passenger, and was handcuffed behind his back with his legs tied together with a seatbelt.
Furthermore, the aircraft was able to land safely into Shannon at 1745 local time.
Gardaí Makes Arrest, Jet2 Makes Statement…
Following the incident, the Gardaí made a statement, confirming an arrest had been made:
“Gardaí attached to Shannon Airport arrested a man, aged in his 20s following an incident on board an aircraft that diverted to Shannon Airport earlier this evening Wednesday 12th June, 2024 at approximately 5.30pm.”
“Gardaí met the aircraft and arrested the man under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.”
“He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in County Clare.”
“Investigations are ongoing.”
Jet2 added to this saying:
‘We can confirm that flight LS155 from Glasgow to Tenerife has diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon so that police could offload a disruptive passenger.’
Aircraft Continued on to It’s Destination…
Data from RadarBox states that following the passenger removal, Jet2 flight LS155, originally from Glasgow, continued on to Tenerife from Shannon.
The aircraft departed at 2051 local time, over two hours later than it’s planned slot.
From there, it arrived into TFS at 0025 local time on June 12 safely without further incident.
As we approach the peak of the Summer season, such passenger disruptions become a common occurrence.
This can be fuelled by the presence of alcohol intoxication when passengers go on holiday.
Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see what the outcome of the investigation will be involving this aggressive passenger.
With an incident like this, he will be likely charged and banned from flying from the airline again.
Past incidents have also resulted in the passenger being fined substantially or sued by the airline for such disruption.
Furthermore, such disruption does cost the airline money, which they will no doubt seek to get back from this.
Jet2 has had to deal with such instances in the past, with their crew well-trained to handle such diversions.
But for now, all eyes will be on the outcome of the investigation from the Gardaí.
