Ontario International Airport (ONT) is capping off a successful summer travel season with a record-breaking Labor Day weekend.

The airport expects to see a 11% increase in passenger volume compared to the same holiday period last year, surpassing the nationwide prediction of an 8.5% increase.

With over 130,000 seats available on arriving and departing flights between Thursday, August 29, and Monday, September 2, ONT is poised to welcome more than 105,000 travelers.

The busiest day is anticipated to be Labor Day Monday, September 2, which will see approximately 23,500 passengers.

ONT: Record Summer Season

“This summer has once again demonstrated ONT’s growing popularity among Southern Californians seeking a convenient, efficient, and enjoyable travel experience,” said Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) Board of Commissioners.

Atif Elkadi, OIAA chief executive officer, expressed satisfaction with the summer travel season and projected that ONT would reach its goal of 2.1 million passengers for the period beginning Memorial Day weekend.

In other recent news, ONT has now received a $4 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The grant will now fund infrastructure improvements at the busy airport.

This funding is part of the FAA’s 2024 Airport Improvement Program. This has allocated a total of $636 million to airports nationwide. ONT will use its portion to continue its runway and taxiway rehabilitation projects.

“We are grateful for the FAA’s support and the ongoing efforts of Congressional leaders in Washington, D.C.,” said Elkadi. “This funding is crucial to ensuring the safety and efficiency of our airport.”

FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Shannetta R. Griffin gave further comment. “This $636 million investment is essential for maintaining and improving our nation’s airport infrastructure.”

On Track for 7 Million Passengers in 2024

ONT’s continued growth and success can be partly attributed to its strategic location in the Inland Empire. A further contributing factor is its continued commitment to providing exceptional service to passengers and airlines.

Looking beyond the Labor Day crowds, the airport is now on track to exceed 7 million passengers this year, a significant increase from its 2016 passenger count. Additionally, ONT ranks among the top 10 cargo airports in the United States.

Ontario International Airport is a full-service airport offering nonstop commercial jet service to numerous destinations in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and Taiwan. It has consistently been recognized as a top airport in J.D. Power’s North America Airport Satisfaction Study.
