In a significant move for the Middle East sector, Oman Air has announced its most substantial route expansion in five years with a new Rome service.

The national carrier of Oman is set to launch direct flights to Rome, starting December 20, 2024. This marks a strategic enhancement of its European network.

Fleet Utilization Strategy

This new route represents a key part of Oman Air’s broader strategy to optimize its fleet usage. Con Korfiatis, CEO of Oman Air, elaborated on his airline’s approach.

“The Rome flights represent a crucial step in our transformation. As our second Italian destination, this route not only bolsters our European offerings. It also initiates our strategy to maximize the utilization of our narrow-body fleet.”

Aircraft and Schedule Details

Oman Air will deploy its narrow-body aircraft on this route. This will likely be served by utilizing either the Airbus A320neo or Boeing 737 MAX from its fleet.

The airline will operate four weekly flights, providing a total of 8 frequencies per week between Muscat International Airport (MCT) and Rome-Fiumicino International Airport (FCO).

The outbound flight is scheduled to depart Muscat at 15:00 local time, arriving in Rome at 19:30. The return leg leaves Rome at 20:30, touching down in Muscat at 05:45 the following day.

This schedule allows for optimal connectivity with Oman Air’s wider network, facilitating smooth transfers for passengers traveling beyond Muscat or Rome.

Market Impact and Competition

This new route positions Oman Air as a stronger competitor in the Europe-Middle East market. It offers an alternative to the major established carriers. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways currently support travel between Europe and Asia or Africa via Middle Eastern hubs.

With introductory fares starting at OMR 75 (approximately USD 195) one-way, Oman Air is poised to attract both leisure and business travelers. This competitive pricing strategy could potentially impact market dynamics on this corridor.

Network Expansion and Future Plans

The addition of Rome as Oman Air’s second Italian destination, following Milan, signals the airline’s commitment to expanding its European footprint.

Aviation analysts speculate that this could be the first of several new European routes for Oman Air as it seeks to leverage its geographical position and modern fleet.

This development is noteworthy as it demonstrates Oman Air’s ambition to play a larger role in international air travel. It also highlights the ongoing importance of Middle Eastern carriers in connecting global markets. This has been particularly evident as the industry continues to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
