Nolinor Aviation Pioneers Virtual Reality Pilot Training in Canada

Canada's Nolinor Aviation has become one of the first air operators to integrate Virtual Reality (VR) into its pilot training program.

Canada’s Nolinor Aviation has taken a ground-breaking step in pilot training. The operator recently announced the integration of virtual reality (VR) technology into its training program.

This initiative places Nolinor among the first airlines in Canada to adopt such technology for training its flight personnel.

Incorporating VR Training Technology

In a move that sets it apart from other airlines, Nolinor has partnered with VRPilot to create an interactive virtual environment replicating the cockpit of its Boeing 737-200.

This innovative approach aims to enhance the efficiency of preliminary pilot training before its pilots transition to conventional flight simulators.

The VR system offers a highly realistic cockpit reproduction, crucial for developing pilots’ muscle memory and reflexes.

It allows pilots to practice both normal and emergency procedures in a safe, controlled environment.

Flexible and Comprehensive Training Program

Nolinor’s VR training program offers flexibility and comprehensive learning opportunities:

  • Solo or duo sessions: Pilots can train alone or with a virtual co-pilot, enhancing communication and teamwork skills.
  • Training and exam modes: The software provides immediate, precise feedback to help pilots improve.
  • 24/7 access: A dedicated VR training room allows pilots to practice at any time, promoting continuous improvement.

Yves Bergeron, Nolinor’s vice-president of operations, highlights the program’s significance.

“VR training optimally prepares our pilots for the conventional flight simulator, maximizing the efficiency of each session. This allows us to focus on complex flight scenarios and advanced skills rather than basic reviews.”

Upgraded Flight Simulator

Complementing the VR initiative, Nolinor has also invested in upgrading its Level C flight simulator in Miami.

Collaborating with RSi Visuals and the Pan Am Academy team, the company has enhanced the visual system, increasing the realism of the external environment visible from the cockpit.
