Nile Air A321 Suffers Brake Fire After Rejected Takeoff from Dammam

Nile air flight NP232, operated by an Airbus A321-200 was conducting the takeoff from runway 34L at Dammam King Fahd International Airport (DMM).

Flight crew conducted an aborted take-off below 100 knots and brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway.

The aircraft’s brakes then caught fire, but airport ground fire service units quickly extinguished the blaze. The occupants of the aircraft were disembarked via emergency evacuation slides.

The aircraft was reported to be carrying 186 passengers and eight crew members. There were no reports of any injuries as a result of the incident.

A subsequent report issued by King Fahd International Airport authorities confirmed that the Nile air aircraft encountered a wheel fire during the takeoff procedure. It confirmed that the incident occurred at 0215 local time on 18 July.

The specialist team are now investigating the incident to examine the details and determine the root cause. Airport management confirmed that the incident did not affect takeoff and landing operations.

The statement by the carrier Nile Air said: “The company quickly provided the necessary care to the passengers. It provided alternative flights and hotels to ensure the comfort and safety of the passengers.”

“The competent air authorities were notified and a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the incident was initiated. We are fully cooperating with all concerned parties.”

Aircraft Details

The aircraft conducting the NP232 service to Cairo International Airport (CAI) was an Airbus A320-200, registered SU-BQL.

This is 19.3-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Nile Air. It has been in operational service with the airline since May 2016.

The Swedish airline Novair operated the aircraft from its initial factory delivery in April 2005 until Nile Air acquired it in 2016.

Nile Air is the largest private airline in Egypt, founded in 2006. Nile Air flies scheduled services from its headquarters at Cairo International Airport to destinations across Egypt, the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, Southern Europe, Asia and Africa.
