Ibom Air, Nigeria’s growing airline, is set to bolster its operations with the addition of a new Airbus A220-300 to its fleet.

This strategic move aims to increase capacity and meet the rising demand for the airline’s services. It further solidifies the carrier’s position as a developing player in the Nigerian aviation sector.

Growth Outpacing Delivery Schedule

In the latest fleet enhancement, Ibom Air has acquired an Airbus A220-300 from Carlyle Aviation, a renowned global aircraft lessor.

This agreement comes in response to the airline’s expanding customer base. This has outpaced the delivery schedule of their original order.

The decision underscores a potentially healthy position for Ibom Air with passenger growth now outpacing aircraft supply.

The airline’s commitment to growth is evident in its October 2021 firm order for 10 Airbus A220-300 aircraft.

The first of these was delivered in November 2023. It marked the beginning of a new era for Ibom Air and set the stage for its ambitious expansion plans.

Ceremony at Maastricht Airport

The delivery event, held at Maastricht Airport in the Netherlands, was a prestigious affair. His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State and shareholder of Ibom Air, personally attended the ceremony.

Key dignitaries joined him, including Prince Enobong Uwah, Secretary to the State Government. Also in attendance was the Hon. Effiong Etim Johnson, Chief Whip, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

Ibom Air’s executive team was also present. They were led by Mfon Udom, Accountable Manager and CEO and George Uriesi, Executive Director and COO.

The presence of these high-profile individuals highlights the importance of this milestone in Ibom Air’s journey. It also underscores its significance for Akwa Ibom State’s economic development.

The Ibom Air Story

Ibom Air has quickly become a notable player in Nigeria’s aviation industry. With this latest addition, the airline’s A220 fleet will grow to 11 aircraft once the remaining nine units from the original order are delivered.

This rapid expansion is a testament to the airline’s success to date. Notably, the Nigerian carrier has managed to capture market share in a competitive industry.

Financial Support from Nigerian Banks

A noteworthy aspect of this acquisition is the financial backing from Nigerian banks. Both Fidelity and Union Banks financed the purchase, with Fidelity taking the lead as the majority partner.

This support demonstrates the growing confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry and Ibom Air’s potential.

It also showcases the increasing willingness of domestic financial institutions to invest in the country’s transportation infrastructure.

Looking Ahead

As Ibom Air continues to expand its fleet and services, passengers can expect:

  • Increased flight options and frequencies to popular destinations
  • Enhanced comfort with modern aircraft featuring state-of-the-art amenities
  • Improved connectivity across Nigeria and potentially to international destinations
  • More competitive pricing due to increased operational efficiency

The addition of the new Airbus A220-300 is a clear signal of Ibom Air’s continued ambition.

As the airline grows, it is poised to play an increasingly important role in connecting people and businesses across Nigeria and beyond.
