Nigeria’s GIG Aviation To Introduce Two ATRs

LONDON – GIG Aviation will purchase two ATR 72-500 freighters to assist the cargo company in expanding its Africa network.

One of Africa’s leading logistics takes advantage of cargo growth with two new ATR 72 freighters.

GIG Aviation is a subsidiary of the GIG group that touts the new ATR to increase it’s business operations efficiency.

In a news briefing, the regional turboprop manufacturer said it will introduce its new ATR freighter to meet the demands of the ever-growing e-commerce in Africa’s most populous country.

High Commitment of Delivery with ATRs…

GIG Aviation CEO, Adetoro Fowoshere stated that: “The acquisition of two ATR 72-500 freighters demonstrates our commitment to provide high standards of delivery services to communities of Africa and Nigeria”.

“We are expanding rapidly through local branches, notably in Nigeria, and the entry into service of these aircraft will be significant in allowing us to expand operations with economic efficiency and reliability, key factors for an airline.”

“With our ATR aircraft, we will continue to meet the cargo needs of communities with increased capacity.”

Tarek Ben Omrane, head of business development of ATR, said: “We are delighted that GIG Aviation has chosen ATR to expand its network and use its unrivaled performance to support the connectivity and e-commerce growth in Nigeria.”

“We believe that ATR aircraft are the perfect fit for such needs and are happy that the customers of GIG Aviation will benefit from fast efficient services provided by GIG Aviation through the use of our aircraft,” he added.

ATR has a strong and extensive presence in the regional freighter market.

There are currently 140 passengers to cargo (converted) ATR freighter aircraft in operation, which represents one-third of the global regional freighter fleet.

ATR is optimistic about the freighter market, despite many manufacturers expressing more interest in cargo aviation. The demand for the freighter market will keep on growing, with a forecasted demand for 460 freighters over 20 years in the up to nine-tonne category.

Airlines in Africa are expressing more interest in the ATR than ever. There are several airlines utilizing the aircraft, including the Lagos-based Overland Airways, Angola-based airline Best fly Worldwide, and Botswana’s national carrier, Air Botswana.

Green Africa Airways is a newcomer to the market, with three new ATR 72-600 already in service, where the first aircraft was delivered in April of last year.

Furthermore, Gabon-based Afrijet inked three ATR 72-600s at the Dubai Airshow in November 2021, to replace its out-going fleet of ATR 72-600s.
