LONDON – American low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines has unveiled details of the livery for its latest fleet addition. The aircraft will be adorned with the image of a Costa Rican two-toed sloth on its tailplane.

The backstory…

Operating a fleet of 110 Airbus A320 family aircraft, Frontier Airlines has a “colourful” history with regards to the unique tail livery of its fleet.

All Frontier aircraft tails feature a unique animal with a special name and backstory. The Hoffman’s two-toed sloth – a native of Costa Rica – has been selected by the airline for its newest aircraft, to honour their destination partner.

Frontier serves both San Jose and Liberia in the Central American nation of Costa Rica via a nonstop service from Orlando, Florida.

Tyri Squyres, vice president of marketing, Frontier Airlines said: “We are so pleased to honor our destination partner Costa Rica and highlight one of the unique and extraordinary sloth species that call Costa Rica home.”

“Our animal tails not only delight adults and children, alike, but they serve an important purpose in highlighting animal species, many of which are endangered.”

“Some people come to Costa Rica just to see the sloths and our nonstop service from Orlando to both Liberia and San Jose, provides easy, affordable flight options for visitors, as well as for Costa Ricans to travel to the U.S.”

An airline supporting endangered wildlife…

The gesture was greeting with similar enthusiasm by Carolina Trejos, Director of Marketing for the Costa Rica Tourism Board, who responded:

“We are beyond thrilled that Frontier Airlines chose the two-toed sloth to be featured on the tail of one of Frontier’s aircraft,”

“The two-toed and three-fingered sloths were declared a national symbol of Costa Rican wildlife in 2021 and conserving the sloth population in Costa Rica remains our priority.”

“We have been working hard to maintain our country’s biodiversity by creating conservation areas around the country, giving travelers the unique opportunity to enjoy more than 30 national parks, nine biological reserves, and 51 wildlife sanctuaries that are home to numbers of sloths.”

“Celebrating this symbolic animal today warms our heart, and we will forever be thankful for this opportunity.”

Naming the sloth…

To engage with patrons, Frontier Airlines, in partnership with Visit Costa Rica, has announced a competition via its social media channels to vote for a name for the sloth.

Consumers can visit Frontier’s social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter up to 12 midnight on June 11 to vote using the hashtag #NameTheSloth. The three name choices are Manny, Tony and Tico.
