BERLIN – German Flag Carrier Lufthansa is set to soon buy a 40% stake in Italy’s ITA Airways.

This now changed as the airline was originally eyeing to buy a majority of the Alitalia successor.

This doesn’t come surprising, but the fact that they’re going to tie up with Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) to acquire the majority stake of the carrier is a surprise.

This isn’t the first such investment of a shipping company in the aviation sector. For example, in recent years CMA CGM and Maersk invested in airplanes together.

Lufthansa and MSC have 90 days to exclusively work on their interest of taking over the majority stake of the carrier.

It’s worth noting that Lufthansa often had an interest in taking over Alitalia, which in the end never happened.

When already talking about Alitalia, ITA Airways is looking to rebrand as Alitalia. This topic will be discussed on January 31st.
