ITA Airways and Avianca enter into strategic codeshare agreement

LONDON – Colombian national carrier Avianca and Italian flag carrier ITA Airways have announced that they are launching a strategic codeshare agreement to smooth travel for their customers between Colombia and Italy via London, UK and Miami, USA. This will operate via single ticket onboard flights marketed and operated jointly by the two carriers.

The newly inked codeshare agreement will come in effect as of 30 October 2022, which will allow Avianca passengers to connect round-trip between Bogota and Rome via London.

Speaking on this codeshare partnership, Avianca’s Director of Alliances, Julio Ordóñez said: “At Avianca, we continue to promote international connectivity, offering our customers multiple travel options to fly to the main destinations in the world in a simple and efficient manner.”

“With this agreement, we expect to transport together with ITA Airways close to 1,000 additional passengers between Colombia and Rome, boosting tourism and business between the two countries. With this codeshare we offer another option to further enhance connectivity between Latin America and Europe.”

On the other hand, the strategic codeshare agreement will enable ITA Airways passengers to travel roundtrip between Rome and Bogota, Cali and Medellin via a connection in Miami. This allows ITA airways passengers to enjoy the powerful network of Avianca with 125 routes spanning across South America and the Europe.

Speaking on this occasion, ITA Airways Chief of Network, Fleet and Alliances, Andrea Benassi said: “We are very proud to have partnered with Avianca.”

“This collaboration allows us to take our passengers to Colombia thanks to flights connecting with Bogota as well as to take Avianca passengers to Italy and Europe with our convenient flights connecting with Rome Fiumicino. With this new agreement, ITA Airways’ codeshare agreements rise to 30, a very important result achieved by the Company in just 12 months.”

This codeshare has been established on current scheduled daily operations of Avianca between Bogota and London with 1x frequency and ITA Airways between Rome-Miami-Rome on 1x frequency basis.

Both the carriers have been recognised to bring strong load factors on these routes with further ease of travel via connection as it integrates extensive regional route network.

Currently, Avianca’s daily flight between Bogota and London departs its origin city of Bogota at 23:15 Local time and arrives London Heathrow at 15:35 local time.

These flights also operate under codeshare with Air India, Etihad, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Air China and ANA Japan on this route. This flight is operated using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

On the other hand, ITA Airways daily flight between Rome and Miami presently departs its origin city of Rome at 10:45 local time and arrives Miami at 16:05 local time. This flight also operates under codeshare with Air France and Delta Air Lines on this route. The flight is operated with Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

Both the carriers have stated that this new codeshare agreement will be a boon for the tourism industry on both the sides, with passengers benefitting from single ticket travel and thus making flight transitions smoother.
