LONDON – Finnish flag carrier airline, Finnair, revealed its latest traffic figures for the month of May.
Their Latest May Figures…
To begin with, the month of May for Finnair this year has been very strong for the carrier. In total, they carried 778,300 passengers.
This figure is a whopping 840.3% increase compared to May 2021 and 14.4% more than the previous month in April 2022.
Despite the COVID-19 Omicron variant hampering a lot of the carrier’s traffic throughout their Asian destinations, as well as the airspace closures that have been incurred by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, Finnair still continued to operate to many of its Asian destinations, mainly because of the booming demand for air cargo in that region.
In terms of their overall capacity of May 2022, Finnair’s ASK (Available Seat Kilometres) increased by 542.4% sitting at 2,638.4 million compared to May 2021 and is a 5% increase compared to April 2022.
The carrier’s RPK (Revenue Passenger Kilometres) for May 2022 sat at 1,631.6 million, an increase of 1,269.9% compared to May 2021 and a 9% increase compared to April 2022.
Coupled with the above, Finnair’s PLF (Passenger Load Factor) for May 2022 sat at 61.8%, an increase of 32.8% compared to May 2021 and a small 2.3% increase compared to April 2022. Despite the load factor being relatively bleak for Finnair during May, the carrier still operated, on average, 261 daily flights. This does include any cargo-only services.
Despite the damaging effects that the Omicron variant and Russia/Ukraine war have had on Finnair’s Asian route performance, the carrier still saw an increase in passenger numbers, ASK, RPK and PLF.

In terms of cargo operations, Finnair saw an increase across the board compared to May 2021’s figures, however, most remained similar to their April 2022 figures. During the month, they carried a total of 10,220.8 tonnes of cargo, a 51.1% increase compared to May 2021.

With the potential for growth, still being huge players for them.
