The UK’s ambitious Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate launches today, marking a transformative shift toward greener air travel in British aviation history.

This groundbreaking legislation represents a crucial step in the nation’s commitment to reducing aviation’s environmental impact while maintaining its position as a global aviation hub.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel, distinguished by its eco-friendly production methods, utilizes renewable resources such as household waste, agricultural residues, and used cooking oil.

This innovative fuel achieves a remarkable 70% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil-based jet fuel. It offers a practical solution to aviation’s environmental challenges without compromising performance.

AviationSource is proud to announce the launch of the ECO Program as part of it's targets and the overall industry target of achieving net-zero by 2050.

Airline Requirements Under New Mandate

Under the new mandate, airlines operating from UK airports must ensure that SAF comprises at least 2% of their total fuel usage starting in 2025. This requirement follows a structured increase, reaching 10% by 2030 and advancing to 22% by 2040.

These carefully calibrated targets balance environmental ambition with practical implementation, allowing the aviation industry to adapt while driving meaningful change.

The scale of this initiative is substantial, with projections indicating that by 2030, the UK airline industry will consume approximately 1.2 million tonnes of SAF annually. This is sufficient fuel to power flights circumnavigating the globe 3,000 times.

This volume demonstrates the UK’s serious commitment to aviation decarbonization while creating significant opportunities for domestic fuel production.

Aviation Stakeholder Comments

Aviation Minister Mike Kane emphasized the broader economic implications: “This mandate not only advances our environmental goals but also positions the UK as a leader in sustainable aviation technology. We’re creating thousands of skilled jobs across the country while building a more sustainable future for air travel.”

The initiative has garnered strong support from industry leaders. Tim Alderslade, CEO of Airlines UK, highlighted the practical challenges ahead.

“While we fully endorse this mandate, ensuring reliable SAF supply at competitive prices remains crucial as global demand increases. We’re working closely with producers and government bodies to establish robust supply chains.”

Introduction of Supporting Measures

Supporting these efforts, the government has announced plans for a revenue certainty mechanism designed to attract investment in domestic SAF production facilities.

This complementary measure aims to reduce financial risks for investors and stimulate the growth of a robust UK-based SAF industry. A detailed consultation on this mechanism is scheduled for early 2025.

AirportsUK Chief Executive Karen Dee emphasized the industry’s proactive stance: “The aviation sector recognizes its environmental responsibilities and has long advocated for this mandate.”

“We’re now focused on developing domestic production capabilities to ensure the UK captures the full economic benefits of this emerging industry.”

Summary

The mandate’s introduction coincides with the first meeting of the refreshed Jet Zero Taskforce, a specialized group dedicated to mapping out the future of clean aviation.

Duncan McCourt, Chief Executive of Sustainable Aviation, noted that SAF will play a critical role, contributing nearly 40% of the carbon reductions needed to achieve net zero by 2050.

As one of the first countries worldwide to implement such comprehensive SAF requirements, the UK is positioning itself at the forefront of aviation sustainability.

This initiative not only supports the government’s broader Plan for Change but also demonstrates how environmental protection and economic growth can work in harmony, creating a blueprint for other nations to follow.
