Approximately four hours into the long-haul service, the flight encountered severe turbulence whilst in the cruise at FL370 (37,000 feet). The aircraft was passing Greenland at the time of the in-flight occurrence.
Due to the severity of the turbulence encountered, flight crew elected to make a return to Europe in accordance with mandatory airline policy. Flight data shows that the aircraft descended approximately 8000 feet during the event. This may have been initiated by flight crew to avoid the zone of severe turbulence.
The turnaround was conducted and flight crew initiated a track to Copenhagen.
Photographs posted to social media taken by a passenger on board the flight shows items strewn about the aircraft’s cabin as a result of the encounter. No injuries have been reported amongst the passengers and crew as a result of the in-flight turbulence event.
