Maldivian A320 Returns to Malé After Engine Compressor Stall

Maldivian flight Q2700 an Airbus A320-200 bound for Thiruvananthapuram returned to Malé after suffering an engine compressor stall on 23 June.

A Maldivian Airbus A320-200 operating the service from Malé in the Maldives to Thiruvananthapuram, India made a precautionary return after suffering an engine compressor stall on 23 June 2024.

The flight had just departed from Malé International Airport (MLE) when the right-hand engine compressor stall occurred.

Following the incident, flight crew terminated the climb procedure and initiated a direct return to the origin airport.

The aircraft subsequently made a safe landing just under 30 minutes after its initial departure.

The aircraft was grounded following the incident and a replacement aircraft was mustered to conduct the onwards flight.

Flight Details

Flight data shows that Maldivian flight Q2700 made a departure from Malé International Airport (MLE) at 1355 local time on 23 June.

The flight had set course for India and was still on climb through flight level FL170 when the engine compressor stall occurred.

The climb was then terminated at FL170, with the diversion and descent being initiated by the operating crew shortly thereafter.

The aircraft conducting the Q2700 service to Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) was an Airbus A320-200, registered 8Q-IAN.

This is a 19.6-year-old CFM engine equipped narrowbody aircraft belonging to the national carrier Maldivian.

It has been in operation service with the airline since October 2012. Prior to its placement with Maldivian, the airframe was operated by the carrier Iberia from its initial delivery in April 2005.

It was deployed under lease to the carrier Mexicana between 2005 and July 2007.

Maldivian is the national airline of the Maldives. It is the airline division of Island Aviation Services, a state-owned corporation.

The airline was founded in the year 2000, and started its operations with domestic flights only.

It began its international operations in the year 2008 with flights to Thiruvananthapuram, India.

Maldivian operates both international flights and inter-island services. The main base of Maldivian is Velana International Airport, located in Malé, the capital of Maldives.

The airline currently flies to 19 destinations, including points in Bangladesh, China, India, and Thailand.

Maldivian has a fleet of 25 aircraft, including Airbus A320-200 and Airbus A321-200 which are configured with both business and economy class cabins.
