Christchurch International Airport (CHC) has partnered with construction giant Fulton Hogan on a transformative project. The proposed development will double the airport’s freight handling capabilities.

This expansion, outlined in the airport’s 2040 Master Plan, aims to strengthen the New Zealand South Island’s international trade connections. It will support the booming e-commerce industry in an increasingly interconnected global market.

Tripling Capacity for Cargo Operations

The ambitious development will expand the aircraft apron parking area to accommodate either eight 737-class aircraft or four larger 757 widebody planes. This will effectively double the current capacity.

The new apron will span an area comparable to six football fields, marking a significant upgrade to the airport’s infrastructure and positioning it as a key logistics hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

This expansion responds to surging air freight demands, fueled by the growth in online shopping and increasing exports of premium South Island products, particularly perishable goods.

The development reflects the changing landscape of international trade, where speed and reliability are crucial factors for businesses and consumers alike.

“Our airport’s round-the-clock operations make it a cornerstone of the freight sector’s success,” explains Christchurch Airport CEO Justin Watson.

“This advantage means faster delivery of incoming parcels and fresher exports of Kiwi products. The expanded capacity will help local businesses reach global markets more efficiently than ever before.”

“By expanding our facilities, we’re investing in our region’s future growth. This development strengthens our role in global trade while meeting increasing freight demands,” Watson adds. He highlighted the project’s strategic importance for the South Island’s economic development.

The project embraces sustainable construction practices, incorporating recycled materials and low-emission asphalt.

Simon Dyne, Fulton Hogan’s Chief Operating Officer – Infrastructure Services, comments: “We’re aligned with Christchurch Airport’s sustainability goals and will bring innovation and excellence to this crucial project.”

Location near Dakota Park

The expanded facility’s strategic location next to Dakota Park, the airport’s growing logistics hub, ensures efficient cargo transfer. Major players like DB Schenker, Freightways, CourierPost, NZ Post, Agility, FedEx, and Hellmann Logistics already operate from this precinct.

With forty hectares reserved for future development, Dakota Park stands ready to accommodate the South Island’s growing trade needs well into the future.

Business Canterbury CEO Leeann Watson emphasizes the project’s economic significance. “This development demonstrates that Christchurch and our airport are adapting to meet evolving business needs across the South Island. We are cementing our position as a key player in New Zealand’s global trade network. It represents a crucial investment in our region’s economic infrastructure.”

The expansion is expected to reach completion in the fourth quarter of 2025.
