Macau International Airport (MIA) has significantly bolstered its air cargo capabilities with the inauguration of a new freighter route by Ethiopian Airlines.

Last week, the carrier inaugurated a new dedicated freighter service, operating between Madrid, Spain and Macau.

The inaugural ceremony was held last week on April 3rd, 2025. It was attended by Mr. Chan Weng Hong, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM).

Also in attendance was Executive Director, Mr. Lei Si Tai, marking a pivotal moment for the region’s logistics network.

Inauguration of Madrid-Macau Freighter Route

Ethiopian Airlines has officially launched its dedicated cargo service connecting Macau and Madrid, Spain. This new route will operate twice weekly using Boeing 777F aircraft. The new route furthers the airline’s commitment to expanding its global cargo footprint.

This strategic link between Asia and Europe promises to enhance the efficiency of air cargo transportation. This is particularly relevant for exports originating from the dynamic Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

By providing a direct freighter connection to Europe, Ethiopian Airlines complements Macau’s existing cargo links. These currently operate to Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. The newly established route significantly boosts the overall logistics competitiveness of the Bay Area.

Ethiopian Airlines is renowned for its modern fleet comprising Boeing B777F, B767F, and B737 freighters. It has signalled a confidence in Macau International Airport’s operational efficiency and strategic geographical position. The launch of this Macau-Madrid route further hightlights MIA’s growing importance as a cargo hub.

Growth at Macau International Airport

Macau International Airport has witnessed consistent growth in its cargo operations in recent years. The burgeoning cross-border e-commerce sector has largely fueled this growth.

In 2024 alone, the airport handled an impressive 108,000 tonnes of cargo. Madrid, a key logistics center in Europe, makes this new connection particularly significant.

The new route effectively addresses the increasing demand for air freight between the GBA and European markets. This further strengthens economic ties between the two major markets.

The introduction of this new route enriches Macau’s international cargo network. It is anticipated to drive a substantial increase in freight volumes handled by MIA.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Macau International Airport commits to exploring further collaborative opportunities with Ethiopian Airlines.

This includes the potential development of additional intercontinental cargo routes, with the shared goal of optimizing Macau’s role within the global logistics landscape.

This new air cargo link signifies a significant step forward in enhancing Macau’s connectivity and solidifying its position as a vital logistics gateway.
