Lufthansa City Airlines, the youngest member of the Lufthansa Group, has marked a fleet milestone with the delivery of its first brand-new Airbus A320neo.

The single-aisle aircraft, registered as D-AIJP and christened “Ingelheim am Rhein,” arrived at the Airbus factory in Hamburg-Finkenwerder.

It opens a new chapter for the regional airline subsidiary and the wider Lufthansa Group.

Munich and Frankfurt Focus

This acquisition underscores the pivotal role Lufthansa City Airlines will play for the airline group. It will be instrumental in reshaping continental air travel to and from key Lufthansa hubs.

The initial focusing will be on Munich before expanding to Frankfurt by 2026. The airline is strategically positioned to bolster the competitiveness of the short-haul network.

This move is crucial for consolidating the Lufthansa Group’s market presence. It also provides essential support for its ambitious long-haul growth plans.

Peter Albers, Managing Director of Lufthansa City Airlines, expressed his enthusiasm following the official handover.

He emphasized that the arrival of this new aircraft serves as a powerful motivator and a testament to the dedication and exceptional work of all employees who contribute daily to the airline’s success and expansion.

The newly delivered Airbus A320neo, “Juliett Papa,” is set to commence operations in May and will offer comfortable seating for 180 passengers. Aligning with the standards of all Lufthansa City Airlines aircraft, this new addition features the advanced Airspace cabin.

Passengers can look forward to significantly larger overhead bins, a modern and adaptable lighting system, and the renowned Lufthansa quality in seating comfort, ensuring a pleasant travel experience.

Lufthansa City Airlines Fleet

With the arrival of this first brand-new A320neo, the Lufthansa City Airlines fleet now comprises a total of eight aircraft. This includes four efficient Airbus A319s and four modern Airbus A320neos.

The airline has ambitious expansion plans for the remainder of 2025. It anticipates the addition of five more brand-new Airbus A320neos and two further Airbus A320neos.

This rapid growth will bring the total fleet size to an impressive 15 aircraft by the end of the current year.

Looking ahead, Lufthansa City Airlines is also preparing for the arrival of the first of 40 ordered Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Deliveries of these aircraft are expected to commence from the end of 2026.

European Route Network

In tandem with its significant fleet expansion, the youngest airline within the Lufthansa Group is also strategically broadening its European route network.

For the summer flight schedule of 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines is introducing seven exciting new destinations. This includes Barcelona, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Düsseldorf, Rome, Edinburgh, Seville and Bordeaux.

This expansion demonstrates the airline’s commitment to offering a wider range of travel options and strengthening its connectivity across Europe.
