Lufthansa B787-9 Returns to Denver with Landing Gear Problem

A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 departing for Frankfurt made a precautionary return to Denver after reporting a landing gear problem after takeoff on 25 September.

A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 departing for Frankfurt, Germany made a precautionary return to Denver, CO with a landing gear problem on 25 September 2024.

Lufthansa flight LH447 had conducted a departure from runway 08 Denver International Airport and was in the early stages of its climb. Flight crew reported a problem with the aircraft’s landing gear and the climb was then terminated.

The aircraft entered a holding pattern and conducted fuel dumping in order to return to the origin airport. The flight subsequently landed on runway 16R without further incident just under one hour after its initial departure.

According to the online source Aviation Herald, a passenger reported that the aircraft had initially aborted a first departure attempt. The aircraft returned to the apron hardstanding due to the passenger medical issue.

The aircraft subsequently conducted its departure for Frankfurt. During the initial climb, the captain then announced that the aircraft landing gear doors were not closing. Following the precautionary return to Denver International Airport the scheduled flight service has been cancelled.

Flight data shows that flight LH447 had made a delayed departure out of Denver at 1913 local time on 25 September. The scheduled departure time for the service was listed as 1735 local time.

Having conducted its departure, flight crew terminated the climb at 10,000 feet before entering a holding pattern to the north of the airport. Fuel dumping then took place to permit the unscheduled return.

The aircraft conducting the LH447 long-haul service to Frankfurt was a Boeing 787-9, registered D-ABPE. This is a 2.5 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the German national carrier Lufthansa. It has been an operational service with the airline since March 2023.
