London Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal facility has been evacuated in the last few minutes due to a security incident. Gatwick Airport (LGW) posted to it’s social media channels advising that a large part of the south terminal has been evacuated as a precaution.
In the airport states that it is continuing to investigate a security incident. The Advisory states that travelers may not enter the south terminal facility whilst investigations are ongoing.
London Gatwick Airport Terminal Evacuation
The incident has sparked a major response from police and emergency services. The authorities ushered passengers at the terminal facility outside swiftly as a precautionary measure. The airport has not yet confirmed the exact nature of the incident prompting the airport evacuation. Gatwick Express suspended train services to the airport stop.
Update 11:35 UTC: North Terminal Normal Ops
According to reports the South Terminal facility by airport authorities at 10:55 this morning. Flight services appear to be operational, and the airport’s North Terminal facility continues to operate normally.
The Gatwick Express rail service remains suspended until further notice.
Passenger reports surfacing on social media have praised the London airport for its efficient handling of this morning’s evacuation. Authorities have relocated thousands to the streets outside the facility.
Update 11:55 UTC: Explosive Disposal Team Called as Precaution
Sussex Police attended London Gatwick Airport earlier this morning in response to a suspected prohibited item discovered in luggage. Authorities summoned the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to the airport as a precaution.
Update 15:00 UTC: Security Alert Lifted
Gatwick Airport has resolved the security alert. The South Terminal has now reopened to passengers.
