London-Bound TAP A321neo Makes Emergency Landing in Porto, Reporting Smoke on Board

9 occupants of a TAP Air Portugal flight were hospitalised after the London-bound A321neo diverted to Porto with smoke on board on 11 March.

A TAP Air Portugal Airbus A321neo London made an emergency landing in Porto after reporting smoke on board on 11 March 2025.

TAP Air Portugal flight TP1356, operated by an Airbus A321-200N, and departed from Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS).

The flight was a scheduled service bound for London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

As the aircraft transited Spanish airspace en route, flight crew reported the presence of smoke on board. As a result, the aircraft was diverted to precaution to nearby Porto, Portugal.

The flight subsequently landed on runway 35 Porto Airport (OPS) approximately 40 minutes after the diversion was made.

According to the Aviation Herald, nine occupants of the flight were referred to local hospitals after suffering smoke inhalation.

The airline confirmed the diversion was the result of a technical issue. TAP Air Portugal mustered a replacement aircraft to complete the onwards scheduled service to London.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that the flight TP1356 had made a delayed departure out of Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport at 1531 local time on 11 March. Scheduled departure time for the rotation was listed as 1440 local time.

Following departure, the flight had climbed to flight level FL360 before the climb was terminated. The precautionary diversion was subsequently initiated with the aircraft seen to the north-west of Porto. The flight then made an emergency landing on runway 35 Porto Airport.

The aircraft conducting the TP1356 service to London Heathrow was an Airbus A321neo, registered CS-TJQ. Is a 5.2 year old narrow body aircraft belonging to the national carrier TAP Air Portugal.

It has been operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in January 2020. The aircraft bears the airline name ‘Humberto Delgado’.
