Loganair ERJ-145 Returns to Manchester After Lightning Strike

A Loganair ERJ-145 departing for Aberdeen made an emergency return to Manchester after sustaining a lightning strike after takeoff on 5 December.

A Loganair Embraer ERJ-145 departing for Aberdeen made a precautionary return to Manchester after sustaining a lightning strike on 5 December 2024.

Loganair flight LM26, operated by an Embraer ERJ-145, had conducted a normal departure out of Manchester Airport (MAN). The aircraft was conducting a scheduled service to Aberdeen Dyce Airport (ABZ).

During the climb after takeoff, the aircraft sustained a lightning strike. Flight crew terminated the climb procedure and elected to return the aircraft to Manchester.

A direct return to the origin airport was negotiated and the aircraft was able to land without further incident approximately 40 minutes after its initial departure.

Flight data shows that Loganair flight LM26 had made an on-time departure from Manchester Airport at 1619 local time on 5 December.

After takeoff the aircraft was still establishing on track when flight crew terminated the climb procedure at flight level FL170.

Flight crew squawked the emergency transponder code 7700 at 1644 local time. A direct return for a priority landing was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting the LM26 regional service to Aberdeen was an Embraer ERJ-145, registered G-SAJH. This is a 25.7 year old regional aircraft belonging to the carrier Loganair. It has been in operational service with the airline since March 2019. The aircraft bears the airline name ‘Clan Kinloch’.

Prior to its service with the current operator the aircraft’s passed through a number of airlines including British Airways. The national carrier originally operated the aircraft since its initial delivery from the factory in May 1999.

Loganair is a Scottish regional airline headquartered at Glasgow Airport in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The airline primarily operates domestic flights within the United Kingdom. It is the largest regional airline in Scotland by passenger numbers and fleet size.
