A LATAM Cargo Boeing 767 freighter lost part of an engine cowling during its takeoff from Miami International Airport on 17 March 2025.
LATAM Cargo flight L71817, operated by a Boeing 767-300 freighter was conducting a departure from Miami International Airport (MIA).
The flight was to be a scheduled service bound for São Paulo Viracopos/Campinas International Airport (VCP).

During the takeoff procedure from runway 09, a part of one of the aircraft’s engine cowlings detached.
A subsequent report by the FAA confirmed the incident. The report stated that during the departure phase, the engine cowling part separated from the aircraft and came to rest on a grass area near the active runway.

The aircraft continued normally to the destination where it landed without further incident. The extent of the damage to the aircraft was unknown, according to the FAA report.
The cargo flight was operating with a crew of three, and no injuries were reported as a result takeoff incident.

Flight data shows that the flight L71817 had made a delayed departure from Miami International Airport at 0152 local time on 17 March.
Scheduled departure time for the service to São Paulo was 2030 local time on 16 March.
Flight was cleared for a departure from runway 09, and the engine cowling part detached during the early stage of the takeoff procedure.
The flight then proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL350 for the service to Viracopos/Campinas International Airport. The subsequent approach and landing at the destination was conducted uneventfully.

The aircraft conducting the L71817 rotation from Miami was a Boeing 767-300 freighter, registered N418LA. this is a 19.4 year old converted freighter belonging to the carrier LATAM Cargo Colombia.
It has been in operation with the carrier since May 2016. Prior to its present service it was operated by LAN Cargo from its initial delivery in November 2005.
