A significant moment in international aviation unfolded on March 30th, 2025, as Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) delivered its inaugural C909 aircraft to Lao Airlines.
This landmark delivery marks the first time a Chinese-made passenger jet has entered the Lao aviation market. It signifies a crucial step in the global expansion of China’s commercial aircraft industry.
Regional Operations in Laos
The delivered C909, bearing the registration RDPL-34229, is configured with a 90-seat, all-economy class layout. This optimized layout ensures efficient passenger capacity for regional routes.
Notably, the aircraft features Laotian language interior and exterior identifications, along with custom exterior paintwork that prominently displays the Champa flower, Laos’s national emblem.

This personalized touch underscores COMAC’s commitment to meeting the specific needs of its international client.
Leased to Lao Airlines, the C909 is poised to enhance the airline’s operational capabilities. Following thorough preparatory procedures in Laos, the jet will commence route operations, bolstering connectivity within the region.
The COMAC C909
The COMAC C909 is a testament to China’s advancements in aviation technology. This turbofan regional jet boasts a range of 2,225 to 3,700 kilometers.
This making it ideal for both domestic and regional international routes in Laos and its neighboring countries. The extended range allows for efficient operation across diverse destinations.
Furthermore, the C909’s exceptional high-temperature performance and ability to operate on short and narrow runways make it particularly well-suited for the Southeast Asian operating environment.
The aircraft’s proven reliability and adaptability are key factors in its growing international appeal. To date, COMAC has delivered 162 C909 aircraft.
These have collectively served 645 routes across 158 cities, safely transporting over 20 million passengers. This marks the C909’s growing operational maturity and passenger trust.

Laos CAA Approval
The Civil Aviation Authority of Laos’ issuance of an Aircraft Type Acceptance Certificate (ATC) to COMAC on March 18th, 2025, was a critical step in this delivery.
This certification confirms that the C909 meets the essential requirements for commercial operations in Laos. To facilitate a smooth transition, COMAC has established a dedicated team to support Lao Airlines with preparatory tasks.
This includes the development of operational manuals, comprehensive personnel training, efficient aviation material support, and robust maintenance capacity building.
COMAC’s commitment will then continue beyond the aircraft delivery. They have deployed a specialized support team, comprising experts in flight operations, cabin crew management, operational control, and maintenance. The team will work to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the C909 in Laos.
About Lao Airlines

Currently, Lao Airlines is focused on expanding its capacity and modernizing its fleet. The lease of the C909 aircraft will significantly contribute to these efforts. It allows the airline to supplement its capacity and upgrade its fleet to meet the increasing demand for air travel in Laos.

Conclusion
This delivery represents a significant milestone for both COMAC and Lao Airlines. It signifies the growing international recognition of Chinese-made commercial aircraft and strengthens air connectivity within Southeast Asia.
The introduction of the Chinese-made aircraft further serves to build legitimacy and operational credulity for COMAC.
