Korean Air Cargo marks a significant milestone this year, celebrating a decade of operations at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

Since launching scheduled cargo flights in 2014, the airport has witnessed consistent year-over-year growth in air cargo volumes. This has boosted its position as a crucial hub for international trade in Atlantic Canada.

On September 4, Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) hosted Korean delegates and key stakeholders to commemorate this achievement. It highlights the strong partnership which has developed between the airport and the airline.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport, Nova Scotia’s primary air transportation gateway, has played a pivotal role in the region’s economic development since its opening in 1960. The airport serves over 4 million passengers annually.

It has been recognized multiple times for its excellence in customer service. Its state-of-the-art facilities include a 10,500-foot runway capable of accommodating the world’s largest aircraft. This makes it an ideal location for international cargo operations.

Korean Air Cargo Presence in Halifax

Korean Air Cargo’s presence at Halifax Stanfield has significantly boosted the airport’s cargo handling capabilities. The airline operates a Boeing 777-200 Freighter, a long-range, wide-body cargo aircraft with a maximum payload of 103 metric tonnes.

This impressive capacity allows for the efficient transport of substantial quantities of goods, particularly benefiting Nova Scotia’s thriving seafood industry.

The airline serves Halifax Stanfield up to three times weekly, providing a vital link between Atlantic Canada and key markets in Southeast Asia and beyond through its hub in Incheon, South Korea.

Joyce Carter, President & CEO of HIAA, emphasized the importance of Korean Air Cargo’s commitment to the region. “Their global network and reliable service have been instrumental in strengthening Atlantic Canada’s supply chain and supporting our economic growth,” Carter stated.

The partnership has not only enhanced export opportunities for local businesses but has also contributed to job creation and economic diversification in the area.

Korean Air, the parent company of Korean Air Cargo, boasts over 50 years of experience in the aviation industry.

As a global top-tier air cargo carrier, it currently operates a fleet of 23 freighters and 136 passenger aircraft, connecting 125 cities across 48 countries. This extensive network allows Nova Scotia’s products to reach markets worldwide efficiently and reliably.

JD Eum, head of Korean Air Cargo’s business division, was pleased with the milestone. “Our decade-long service to Halifax has been crucial in linking Canada with global markets.”

“We’re committed to continually improving our services and strengthening our cooperation with Halifax International Airport Authority,” Eum remarked.

Nova Scotia Seafood Industry

One of Korean Air Cargo’s specialties is the handling of delicate and time-sensitive cargo, a skill particularly valuable for Nova Scotia’s seafood industry. The airline provides expert advice and specialized handling for products like live lobster, ensuring they reach international markets in prime condition.

This capability has significantly contributed to the growth of Nova Scotia’s seafood exports, a fact acknowledged by the Hon. Kent Smith, Minister of Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Economic Impact

The economic impact of Korean Air Cargo’s operations at Halifax Stanfield has been substantial. Since 2014, air cargo volumes have increased by an impressive 23%. It has seen a total of 39,450 metric tonnes processed in 2023 – the second-best year on record.

This growth has not only boosted export capabilities but has also created jobs and stimulated economic activity throughout the region.

Halifax Mayor Mike Savage praised the partnership, describing it as a testament to the city’s global outlook and business-friendly environment.

The collaboration between Korean Air Cargo and HIAA has played a crucial role in reinforcing Halifax Stanfield’s position as a key international trade hub on Canada’s east coast.

As HIAA looks to the future, it aims to build on the success of the past decade. HIAA commits to further enhance its cargo handling facilities, strengthen supply chains, and support the movement of goods to and from Atlantic Canadian communities.Copy
