KLM, the Dutch flag carrier and Air France-KLM Group member, has welcomed its first Airbus A321neo. The carrier will now progressively replace its older Boeing 737 aircraft with the new Airbus narrowbody variant.
This narrowbody aircraft delivery marks a significant step in KLM’s broader fleet modernization strategy, focusing on fuel-efficient, cutting-edge aircraft.
KLM plans to induct five new widebody Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners and Airbus A350 variants. These will be the replacements for its existing fleet of Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 aircraft.
For its cargo arm, four new Airbus A350F freighter aircraft will replace the existing Boeing 747 freighters.
Narrowbody Fleet Replacement
The A321neo brings impressive environmental benefits to KLM’s operations. Its advanced technology significantly reduces noise levels during takeoff, approach, and landing. This, combined with superior fuel efficiency, aligns perfectly with KLM’s eco-friendly goals.
KLM’s new A321neo boasts a spacious two-class configuration, accommodating 227 passengers. The aircraft features Airbus’ innovative Airspace cabin, complete with XL bins.
These larger overhead compartments offer 60% more luggage space, ensuring a smoother boarding experience for both passengers and crew. Additionally, every seat is equipped with USB-C ports, and a state-of-the-art lighting system enhances overall comfort.
As the largest member of Airbus’ popular A320neo Family, the A321neo delivers unmatched range and performance.
Powered by next-generation CFM International LEAP-1A engines and fitted with sharklets, this aircraft achieves remarkable results:
- 50% reduction in noise footprint
- At least 20% decrease in fuel consumption
- Significant CO₂ emission cuts
These improvements come without compromising passenger comfort, thanks to the widest single-aisle cabin available.
The A321neo’s popularity is evident, with over 6,400 orders from more than 90 global customers to date.
Like all Airbus aircraft, it can already operate using up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims to make its entire fleet 100% SAF-compatible by 2030, further cementing its commitment to sustainable air travel.
The new Airbus A321neo is now expected to begin operational service for KLM in mid-September.
