San Diego International Airport (SAN) and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines recently marked a new milestone.
Last week saw the launch of KLM’s first nonstop flight to Schiphol International Airport (AMS) in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The inaugural event took place at SAN’s Terminal 2, where passengers enjoyed festive celebrations before boarding the Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Airport and airline executives kicked off the new route with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing strengthened ties between the two cities.
KLM: Seventh International Carrier at SAN
KLM becomes the seventh international airline to operate at SAN, offering three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. This year-round service adds Amsterdam as SAN’s tenth international destination, expanding travel options for San Diego residents and visitors.

Kimberly Becker, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, expressed excitement about the new route. “We’re thrilled to welcome KLM and celebrate this direct flight to Amsterdam, a city famous for its scenic canals and renowned museums.”
“This service not only meets the growing demand for European travel, which has surged over 30% from last year, but also provides seamless connections to other European cities via KLM’s hub in Amsterdam.”
The new flight is a boon for San Diego’s economy. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria highlighted its significance, stating, “This direct route to Amsterdam boosts jobs, tourism, and international business opportunities.”
“Years of collaboration, including our 2022 trade mission to the Netherlands, made this possible. It shows how global partnerships bring lasting benefits to our city.”

For travelers, the route enhances access to Europe. SAN already offers nonstop flights to London and Munich, and KLM’s Amsterdam service opens doors to over 160 destinations in KLM’s network.
As a SkyTeam Alliance member, KLM partners with 19 airlines, including Air France and Delta Air Lines, offering coordinated schedules, shared loyalty program benefits, and more travel choices.
Bas Brouns, KLM’s CFO and Managing Director, spoke of the route’s importance. “Launching this direct flight connects two vibrant cities and strengthens our transatlantic network.”
“San Diego, a hub of culture and innovation, is a key destination for both leisure and business travelers. This service aligns with our growth strategy in North America and our commitment to delivering exceptional travel experiences.”
