Kenya and Angola have pledged to deepen their bilateral relations, with a key focus on reviving direct flights between Nairobi and Luanda.
This commitment was announced following a high-level meeting between Kenyan President William Ruto and his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, at the presidential palace in Luanda on Wednesday.
The resumption of direct flights by Kenya Airways will significantly enhance trade and tourism between the two nations. Furthermore, Angola has agreed to reciprocate Kenya’s visa-free policy for Angolan citizens, facilitating easier travel for Kenyans, particularly professionals such as teachers.
Kenya and Angola Strengthen Relations
“This move will significantly ease the movement of our professionals, such as teachers, to Angola,” President Ruto stated. Beyond aviation and tourism, the two leaders engaged in crucial discussions on matters of continental importance.
These included the ongoing peace efforts in the Great Lakes region, particularly the Luanda Process for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Both leaders emphasized the need for a joint approach involving the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) to consolidate peace initiatives in the region.
“Peace and security in our continent are paramount, and we are committed to a comprehensive and inclusive approach to ensure its success,” President Ruto explained.
President Ruto, who has been actively championing reforms within the African Union, invited President Lourenço to a retreat in Kenya later this month. This retreat will serve as a crucial precursor to the upcoming AU Heads of State Summit in February.
Furthermore, President Ruto formally requested President Lourenço’s support for the candidacy of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
