7 Just Stop Oil supporters have disrupted passenger departures at London Gatwick Airport this morning, Monday 29 July 2024.
The activists have targeted departures from the southern terminal at Gatwick Airport. This latest action forms part of a concerted plan to disrupt UK and European airports which is being enacted over the summer travel period.
The activist group Just Stop Oil joins 21 other groups internationally, demanding governments establish a fossil fuel treaty. They seek to end the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030.
Disruption at Gatwick Airport Southern Terminal
In the recent disruption action at London Gatwick, seven activists entered the southern terminal facility at around 0800 local time this morning, Monday 29 July.
They used suitcases equipped with lock-on devices to block the departure gates at the terminal.
Airport Protest Actions Continue
This morning’s disruption at London Gatwick Airport follows a targeted action by the group Just Stop Oil at Heathrow Airport last week.
On the morning of Wednesday 24 July, Metropolitan police arrested 9 protestors from the group along perimeter roads at Heathrow.
The activist group has committed to using all means necessary to cause airport disruptions across Europe during the summer season.
They have indicated that they would avoid action on active and inactive runways.
Oil Kills Actions at European Airports
The Oil Kills international uprising has been taking action at airports around the world. 21 groups across 12 countries have taken action at 17 airports so far.
They include: Letzte Generation Germany, Folk Mot Fossilmakta and Scientist Rebellion in Norway, XR Finland, Futuro Vegetal in Spain, Just Stop Oil in the UK, Drop Fossil Subsidies and Act Now – Liberate in Switzerland, Letzte Generation Austria, Extinction Rebellion and Scientists Rebellion in Sweden, Doe Deurne Dicht in Belgium, Last Generation Canada, XR Boston, Last Generation Sacramento, and Scientist Rebellion Turtle Island from the USA.
The Oil Kills international began last Wednesday the same week the world’s hottest day has been broken twice in one week.
Last Monday, the global average surface air temperature reached 17.15C, breaking the record of 17.09C set the previous day. This beats the record set in July 2023.
8 Protestors Arrested
According to Sussex Police, eight people have now been arrested after protesters staged the demonstration near the security entrance at the South Terminal of Gatwick Airport.
Tuesday 30th Heathrow Attack
Following yesterday’s disruption at Gatwick Airport, Just Stop Oil activists have targeted Heathrow Airport once again.
Members of the group have sprayed departure boards and windows in Terminal 5 with orange paint earlier this morning.
